WENDELL M. STANLEY is not necessary for the trans- formation of malignancy and that very intimate relations must exist among viruses. Similar research has been per- formed using X-rays rather than another virus to bring out the original virus. Work in this area has been linked with leukemia. Connects Virus to Cancer Dr. Stanley pointed out that no direct connection has yet been found between viruses and cancer in human beings but emphasized his belief that such a connection exists and can be discovered with new research techniques and ex- periments. He further emphasized the com- plex and hard to understand na- ture of viruses with another ex- ample drawn from recent experi- ments in which a researcher took a virus conected with a mild res- piratory disease in humans and infected a hamster with it. A very virulent case of cancer re- sulted. "We need to explore this inter- action between the many kinds of viruses and cells. Work is going forward but new thinking, new experiments and new techniques are needed to produce real break- throughs in cancer research," he said. Nevertheless, Dr. Stanley pointed out, research today is yielding very valuable and inter- esting results.
