Faces Redistribution Need COMPUTER PROBLEMS: PsychologyCenter Studies Man-Machine Relations The University's psychology de- partment has established a $300,- 000-a-year research program in the new Human Performance Cen- ter. Unique in the nation, the cen- ter's object is to promote long- range programs of basic research and scholarly activities that will contribute to the knowledge and theory of human performance. Essentially the center is making an effort to understand and de- scribe man's abilities in various functions of the technological age. In an effort to communicate this to the public, the center is holding an open house at 1 p.m. today in the West Physics Bldg. Machines Important The problem of man's abilities is vital because today he does so much of his work either with or through machines. He not only uses machines but cooperates with them in his office practices, weap- ons systems and industrial plants. Thus, the increasing demand for knowledge of man's abilities and limitations must be met and ma- chines designed to fit this knowl- edge. Some topics being pursued by the center are: Human Memory -Studies of the short-term hu- man memory. --Studies of the human decision- making process with emphasis on the use of judgement and proba- bilities. -Studies on the role of in- formation in the decision-making process. -Studies of man's abilities to process information. Psychological Techniques In carrying out these and other studies, the, scientists will re- examine and utilize the theories and techniques developed in ex- perimental psychology and exploit the mathematical tools now avail- able to psychologists. Active in the center's work are Professors Arthur W. Miller, Ward Edwards, William L. Hays, Richard Pew and Edwin J. Martin, all of the psychology department. About 30 graduate students and technical assistants are also involved in the project. The center maintains close liai- son and cooperative working ar- rangements with many of the re- search organizations within the University. Ties in this direction are being extended. -University News Service MAN AND MACHINE combinations are being studied to find out how men and computers and work together best. Scientists at the University's Human Performance Center use such tools as the computer above, being operated by Prof. Ward Edwards, to study man's abilities and limitations in various man-machine combinations. Such studies will aid areas in which machines play important roles. I I ARAB CLUB presents "ARABIC MOVIE0 s v The Empty Pillow with subtitles Sat., April 18, 7 & 9 P.M. Aud.
