Shortly after the start of the third period, goalie Pallett was hurt, but continued to play. Loyola fi- nally spoiled the shutout on a slap shot from the blue line by de- fenseman Bren Doherty. Gary Butler and Cole added two more tallies for the Blue to complete the scoring. Farley started off the meet by taking a first place in the 1000- yard freestyle with a winning time of 10:38.2. Less than 15 minutes later he came back with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle. Later on in the program he completed his triple triumph with a win in the 500-yard freestyle. Ready To Go Eight dives were left in the div- ing competition after the 1000. These were completed and then the swimmers in the medley relay were ready to go. Then Farley came through with his second victory of the meet. Actually, Farley was almost touched out in the race by Wails. The Bartlesville, Oklahoma sprint- er was so close that some team members thcught that he had beaten Farley. Both Wolverines beat out 1963 Big Ten champion in the 200, Gary Verhoeven, who finished third. In the 500 where Verhoeven is also the defending Big Ten cham- pion, the Hoosier finished third. His teammate 'T crry Townsend finished second behind Farley. Times Off Farley's times were all slightly off his three vwsity records His time in the 500 of 5:00.1 was only 1.1 seconds from Verhoeven's win- ning time in the Big Ten last sea- son. Stager was very pleased with the performance of Walls in the 100- yard freestyle. Walls won in 49 7 and had the race under control all the way according to Stager. Another sophomore. Bob Tanner, finished third. Stager's overall comment about the meet was that, "All our guys swam well. Everyone tried." Vacation Practice He did say that one disadvan- tage was the team's lack of recent COLLEGE BASKETBALL Memphis State 83, Chicago Loyola 65 Maryland 91, Wake Forest 82 Ohio U. 76, Muskingum 58 experience in a short course pool after practicing in a 50-meter pool in Florida during vacation. This was offset he said, though, by the conditioning benefits that were de- rived by practice in the longer pool. Indiana piled up its margin of victory by winning both relays and slamming the first two places in the backstroke, butterfly, breast- stroke, and individual medley plus two first places in diving. Bartsch, Michigan's Pan-Ameri- can backstroke champion, took a third place behind world record- holder Tom Stock and sophomore Pete Hammer. Stock and Bartsch let Hammer set the early pace and both came on to pass the soph. But Hammer wouldn't quit and touched out Bartsch for second place. Watered Down 1000-YD FREESTYLE-1. Farley (M); 2.
