SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1964 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1964 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE Michigan Ieers Bop Hapless MSU, 7-2 71' Grapplers Clip Iowa, 15-9 By JIM TINDALL In a rough, hard-fought hockey game, Michigan's Wolverines top- pled the MSU Spartans 7-2 at the Coliseum last night. This was a key victory for the' Blue,'putting them in sole posses-1 sion of first place after Colorado College beat Minnesota 8-4, Fri- day night. The win gave the Wolverines a weekend sweep, as they beat the Spartans in East Lansing, Friday night, 2-0. It gave Michigan its sixteenth victory with only two losses. Coach Al Renfrew sounded re- lieved when he said, "I am just real happy that we could take two from State. They have a good team, and they are always up for this series." Gray Superb Goalie Bobby Gray turned in another superb performance in the nets for Michigan. His streak of shutouts ended in the second per- iod, however, after he had played 172 minutes and 19 seconds with- out allowing a goal, setting a school record. "Gray is the key to the type of game we play," said Coach Al Ren- frew. "Without a great goalie like Gray, we could never concentrate as much on offense as we do." He added, "Gray was simply great again tonight, simply great." Michigan scoredo first, at 9:43 of the first period, on a slapshot by defenseman Barry MacDonald from the bleu line. The Wolverines scored twice more in the period, on tallies by Gary Butler and Ron Coristine. Woolf Stricken It looked as if the game might turn into a rout, when MSU's goal- ie Harry Woolf was stricken with muscle spasms in his back after Butler's first goal of the evening. He was replaced by Alex Terpay who played well for the Spartans, stopping several breakaways. Nine penalties marred first per- iod play, four of which were on the Wolverines. Action was marked by hard checking by both teams. Play was very wide open, but neither team could develop a sustained of- fensive drive of any kind. The second period saw Michigan score three more times. Tom Cole tallied once, and Gary Butler com- pleted a hat trick as he scored twice more, giving him 27 goals for the season. Shutouts End Michigan State came to life briefly when the Blue were short- handed two men. Doug Roberts pushed two shots past goalie Bob Gray at 16:13 and 16:52, ending Gray's string of shutouts. Play was called very closely throughout the period, as the Wol- verines were called for five in- fractions. Several brawls nearly broke out, but the game was kept in control by the frequent inter- vention of the linesmen. Wilfred Martin scored the only goal of the third period on a 20- foot slapshot. Boht teams seemed ,neffectual in the final stanza, each having numerous rushes stopped short of the offensive zone.. Although he was held scoreless, Captain Gordie Wilkie played a fine game, nearly scoring on sev- eral occasions. The squads played before one of the largest crowds of the season, as almost 3500 fans nearly filled the Coliseum. The weekend's sweep gives the Wolverines a 7-1 conference rec- ord, and sends them into the Min- nesota series, predicted by Coach Renfrew as "real tough," on the crest of a nine game winning streak. The Wolverines led 12-9 going into the final match, when Bob Spaly scored three takedowns to' edge Iowa anchorman Roger Schil- ling, 6-4. Spaly picked up an ear- ly two points in the first per- iod and while going for a pin in the second three minutes suffered! a quick reversal that evened the score going into the final stanza. The Wolverine junior then countered the Iowan with a rever- sal, two takedowns, and a, point of riding tmie to insure the Mich- igan victory. Inactive The Hawkeyes, who don't see their next action until the Big Ten meet on March 6-7, kept even with the defending conference champs until the 174-pound bout, when the Wolverines won three straight. Hawkeye Morris Barnhill jump- ed Iowa into an early 3-0 lead with a 7-5 decision over Ralph Bahna in the 123-pound match. Bahna's escape at the opening Nice Heavie 123-lbs.--Barnhill (I) dec. An escape with 40 seconds to go in the 130-pound match gave Wolverine Bill Johanessen a 4-3 win over Bill Fuller and tied the team score at 3-3. Johannesen set up the winning margin with a fast takedown at the start of the match and, after being reversed, follow- ing with a one-point escape. Iowa's Norm Parker kept his pine-meet undefeated season string intact with a strong 8-0 decision over Gary Wilcox at 137, but in the next weight bracket the Wol- verines evened the score. Lee Deitrick kept the home team even up with the Hawkeyes by handing Iowa's Joe Greenlee his first de- feat of the season, 6-4, counter- ing Greenlee's last period rally with a series of escapes. A takedown with 1:30 to go in the 157-pound bout paced the way for Michigan captain Wayne Mil- ler's 3-2 victory over soph Wilbur Devine, and Wolverine Big Ten champ Rick Bay outhandled Jay Roberts in the 167-pound depart- ment, 6-2. An escape and takedown in the second period gave Hawkeye Mel- vin Wieland a 3-2 decision over Chris Stowell at 177. Now 10-1 for the dual meet sea- son, the Wolverine grapplers next travel up to East Lansing next Saturday to face a strong Michi- gan State team.
