It is a fact that no other Bigj Ten team has ever dominated a conference meet as the Wolverines did on Saturday at East Lansing. The Wolverines won eight of the nine final matches and racked up an impressive 161 points, only 5 short of perfect, and 75 points ahead of second place Indiana. daily sports, NIGHT EDITOR: JIM FORRESTER 26Ctc} {# t}} X f i CAMPUS-1 BLOCK 418 E. Dell then teamed with soph- omore Mark Conti and smashed their way to the second doubles championship 6-2, 6-0. In the only loss of the afternoon Brian Marcus and Pete Fishbach were defeated by Lon Lutz and Tom Rice of Northwestern in the first doubles. Lutz, last year's first singles champion, and Rice, 'who was seeded second in second singles, had been playing together for only a short time, but their individual talents unsurped any lost of part- nership as they downed a weary Marcus and Fishbach team 7-5, 6-2. Previously, Fishbach easily beat Chip Clements of Illinois 8-6, 6-2 for the second singles crown and Marcus had downed Tom Sadvig of Iowa for the third singles championship. Conti, who may be next year's' first singles player since Dell, Fishbach, and Marcus are grad- uating, displayed a beautiful serve1 and a strong net game in smash- ing Minnesota's Dave Stearns 6-2,j 6-2. Golf The Michigan Golf team, con- sidered a dark horse contender for the Big Ten crown, never got rolling and finished a dismal sixth as Michigan State grabbed their first Big Ten golf title at EastI Lansing on Saturday. After 36 holes it appeared that the Spartans would run away with the title holding a comfortable 111 stroke lead.. However, in the third round, a fired up Purdue team charged the course and by noon had cut the lead to one 'stroke. The Spartans, though, were not ruffled by the Boilermakers and ended with a 1126 total, six strokes ahead of Purdue. The Wolverines, who were only six strokes out of third place after the first round, could not cope with Saturday's cold and windy weather finishing the day 29 strokes out of third and 56 behind the leader. After the first round of play it. appeared that Michigan's Rod Sumpter would have a good shot at individual honors, but a second day 77 77-154 total left him well back in the pack. While Sumpter soared to an overal total of 302 Indiana's Don Padgett carded a third round 67 missing the course record by one stroke and, shooting an overall 290 to take the individual title. The meet was dominated by In- diana and Wisconsin, who com- bined for 13 of 16 first place fin- ishes. Larry Highbaugh of Indiana was the top scorer of the meet, personaly accumulating 17 points, the most since Jesse Owens scored 20 points 33 years ago. Gopesfly l towards title It's wait 'til next year for Coach Moby Benedict's Wolverine base- ball squad. Michigan's last hopes for the Big Ten championship disappeared this weekend when the diamond squad dropped three of four deci- sions, lowering their conference mark to 6-6. Hitting failed the Wolverines in all four contests. Friday the dia- mondmen wasted fine efforts by Jim Burton and Gerry Christman, losing 1-0 and 2-1 to Purdue. The second contest went nine innings. The Wolverine batters were futile in the first game of Satur- day's doubleheader with Illinois falling 2-0. Mark Carrow was charged with the defeat. In the second game of the twinbill the Michigan batsman finally came througl, with four runs and the Wolverines were able to give Tom Fleszar a 4-0 win over the Illini. In addition to Michigan's twin- bill with Minnesota Friday, the team will be in action two other times this week. This afternoon the Wolverines travel to Mt.Pleas- ant for two games with Central Michigan, and Saturday the squad will entertain Iowa twice at Ferry Field. Both of the home doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m. high hurdles, and the triple jump. Michigan head coach Dave Martin was not too disappointed with his team's performance.
