World Series in

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (WP)-The
Republic of China, in the longest
Little League World Series game
ever played, topped Valleyfield,
Que. Canada, 5-0 yesterday, in a
12-inning opening round contest.
Regulation games are six innings.
China pitchers Chih-Yuan Chen
and Jui-Chin Chang combined to
pitch a one-hitter that was a no-
hitter until the bottom of the 12th
inning.
Canada's only hit was an infield
single by Robert Gauthier, that
was deflected by China pitcher
Chang.
This was the fourth series game
of the day. In earlier games, San-
ta Clara, Calif. shut out Williams-

nine innings under Little League
series rules. Chen, in an amazing
performance, struck out 21 Ca-
nadian batters, a new series rec-
ord. All told, China pitchers had
26 strikeouts.
China, which amassed 16 hits,
had runners on base in almost
every inning but could not bring
any runs home until the 5-run
12th. The runs scored on a single,
an error, a double by Hung-Pei
Chen, a single and a 3-run homer
by Yuan-Chih Kuo.
Canada had only one base run-
ner in the first 10 innings. Two
Canadian batters walked in the
11th and then Gauthier led off
the 12th with his single.
Santa Clara, on Chuck Carbis'
no-hitter, eliminated home-town
favorite Williamsport 2-0, and
Tampa beat Weisbaden, Germany,
2-1 on John Tagliarino's no-hit-
ter.
Elyria, Ohio, defeated Mayagez,
Puerto Rico, 5-2, in an afternoon
game.
Carbis struck out 10 and walked
only two, as Santa Clara scored
both its runs on wild pitches by
Williamsport's Don Cohick.
The 5-foot-9 Tagliarino struck
out 16 of the 20 batters he faced
in Tampa's victory. The only run
off him came when Paul Weis-
senborn walked and made it to
third on a passed ball and wild
pitch, then scored on another
passed ball.
Tagliarino and ;Dennis Valdes
hit solo home runs for Tampa.
Elyria scored three runs in the
second inning on a pair of walks,
an error, Tom Moyer's double and
wild pitch by loser Pedro Vargas.
Elyria added two more in the fifth
when Moyer stole home and an-
other came in on a wild pitch.

By The Associated Press
BOSTON - Tony Conigliaro's
two-out single scored Mike An-
drews in the last of the ninth in-
ning yesterday and gave the
Boston Red Sox a 7-6 victory over
the Minnesota Twins.
Andrews opened the frame with
a walk and took second on a sac-
rifice. Reg Smith was intention-
ally walked. Reliever Dean Chance
fanned Rico Petrocelli. But Con-
igliaro lashed his drive to left cen-
ter and Andrews raced home,
ending the game in which 11
pitchers participated, seven of}
them Twins.
The Twins, trailing 6-1, staged
rallies in the seventh and eighth
innings to tie the score 6-6. Har-
mon Killebrew smashed his 35th
home run after a walk to Cesar
Tovar in the seventh. Then Tony
Oliva doubled and scored on
George Scott's throwing error.
Pinch-hitter Bob Allison came
through with a two-out single in
the eighth and Tovar followed
with his sixth home. run to tie
the score.
The Red Sox opened the scor-
ing on Scott's lead-off homer in
the third inning, and the big first
baseman drove in another run
with a single in the fourth. Bos-
ton then made it 4-0 in the fifth
on a walk, an error and a sacri-
fice bunt followed by Smith's sac-
rifice fly and Petrocelli's single.
Rookie Mike Nagy held. the
Twins until the fifth when Rich
Reese singled, Craig Nettles
doubled and Leo Cardenas lined
a two-out single to left for one
run. Nettles also tried to score on
the hit but was thrown out by
Carl Yastrzemski.
A single by Gerry Moses, a field-
er's choice and Syd O'Brien's fifth
homer made it 6-1 in the Boston
sixth.
CHICAGO -- Rico Carty's solo4
homer and run-producing double!
and Ron Reed's sharp pitching
helped the Atlanta Braves bounce'
back from a no-hit humbling with
a 6-2 victory over the Chicago
Cubs yesterday.
The lanky Reed twirled his
fourth straight triumph and up-*
ped his record to 12-8 with a nine-
hitter as Chicago ace Fergy Jenk-
ins, 17-11, failed to finish.

Carty, who also singled in four
trips, snapped Atlanta's lethargy
after Tuesday's no-hit blanking
by the Cub's Ken Hotzman with
a lead-off homer in the second.
Carty doubled across the first
tally in a three-run Braves' fourth
following singles by Tony Gon-
zalez and Hank Aaron. Clete Boy-
er's single and a fielder's choice
wrapped up Atlanta's scoring in
the fourth.

Giants white-washed
NEW YORK - Jim McAndrew,
backed by a lusty extra-base hit
attack, including Art Shamsky's
three-run homer, pitched the New
York Mets past the San Fran-
cisco Giants 6-0 with a two-hitter
last night.
The victory was the sixth in a
row for the Mets and'pulled them
within 6a games of Chicago, lead-
ers in the National League East
Division. The Giants dropped to
fifth in the West.j
McAndrew, 5-5, struck out six
and walked three. His only trou-
ble came against Don Mason, who
doubled with one out in the first
inning and tripled with two down
in the third. No other runner got
past first base as he extended the
Giants' scoreless string to 27
straight innings.
