Page Four THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, August 19. 1969 I _. _ _._. r '.,'a w,_. .. _ _ .. BASEBALL: The most dangerous game For Direct Classified Ad Service. Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 NEW YORK WP)-Baseball is aI dangerous game compared to such painful activities as boxing and soccer ... at least it is if you ask torn and tattered Ivan Murrell. Murrell, a 24-year-old outfield- er for the San Diego Padres, gave up a promising career in boxing and a mriore promising career in soccer to try his hand at baseball, and all he has to show for it thus far are broken bones and torn ligaments. "I've played soccer ever since I was little and I never got hurt," said the personable Ivan. "In box- ing, I won 20 to 25 amateur mid- dleweight fights without a defeat and didn't get a mark. "Then I started playing base- ball and the first month after I signed with Houston in 1963 I broke my wrist." That was just the start. In 1964, he knocked out the shoulder of his throwing arm by running into a wall trying to make a catch. In 1965 it was a torn knee car- tilage that required surgery just before he was to open the season with the Astros. In 1967, it was bone spurs, first on the right heel, then the left. And last season he Injured his left shoulder trying to make a diving catch. Baseball looks easy, but I find it tougher than soccer or boxing," Murrell said. "Sure, they have some fights in soccer. They attack the officials, and guys kick you from behind and jump all over you, but I never get involved in that. "The only injury I got fighting came in a street fight. I whipped the guy, and then while his par- ents were asking me why we were fighting, he snuck up behind me daily sports NIGHT EDITOR: JIM FORRESTER and hit me in the head with a rock. It took about 15-20 stitches. That ended my boxing career. Ever since then I'd get giddy when I got hit in the head." Murrell started playing base- ball in his native Costa Rica when he was 16 and signed with Hous- ton several years later because the Charley O-*S BOSTON (M)--American League President Joe Cronin said last night he has ordered owner Char- les O. Finley of the Oakland Ath- letics to stop the practice of dis- tracting opposing players by having his organist strike up the music while play is in progress. Cronin said he issued the order after receiving a report from the umpires who handled Sunday's controversial game in which De-; troit pitcher Denny McLain was distracted by organ music. "I told him I don't condone such action," Cronin said while at- tending the Minnesota Twins- Boston Red Sox game. "We don't mind organ playing when there's a break in the action but not wheni the pitcher is getting ready to throw." money looked better, "although I would be making more than the president in Costa Rica now if I had stayed with soccer." The injuries have kept his sal- ary down and his bat on the bench so that he had only played in 54 games in parts of five, sea- sons with the Astros, and he was languishing on the bench after being drafted by the Padres this season when I was just pinchit- ting. I would have gone back to soccer." Murrell's average now is .258 and rising. But beside using his bat to hit baseball's, he uses it to knock on wood every day. "This is my first season with out an injury. If it only stays that way." to themusic! The Sunday incident was the second at Oakland involving Mc- Lain, himself an accomplished organist. The first time on May 29 when Oakland Coliseum organist Lloyd Fox struck a loud chord as McLain went into his stretch and the pitcher hesitated and was charged with a balk. Then Sunday, with McLain again pitching in Oakland, the organist struck up loud chords as the Athletics started a rally. Mc- Lain protested to plate umpire Bill Stewart, who told Oakland Manager Hank Bauer to have the music stopped but to no avail. The music apparently didn't re- duce the Tiger Ace's effectiveness, however, as he recorded his 19th victory with a 9-4 decision. ~-~ s x c . FOR RENT FOR RENT FOR RENT FOR FALL-Attractive furn, apt.
