Lions dump Bills, 24-12

For Direct Classified Ad Service. Phone 764-0557
Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00

DETROIT (/P) - The Detroit
Lions defeated 0. J. Simpson and
the Buffalo Bills 24-12 last night
in the Heisman Trophy winner's
debut as a professional football
player.
The Lions scored two touch-
downs in the first half and a field
goal and touchdown Jn the second
while holding the Bills of the
American Football League to
touchdowns in the first and last
quarters.
Simpson, who signed recently
for a reported $300,00 for three.
years, played just 12 seconds in
the first half and several minutes
in the second.-1
Simpson's first run as a pro-
fessional m11et with little success as
he collided with Denis Moore and
the strong center of the Lions' de-
fense line.
With less than two minutes on
the clock in the fourth period,
Simpson put the Bills in scoring
position on a pass which covered
37 yards from Jim Harris.
Seconds later, Harris hit Bill

daily
sport~s
NIGHT EDITOR:
JIM FORRESTER
Enyart with a 22-yard touchdown
pass.
Rookie Alte Taylor completed
the scoring for Detroit with a
48-yard run up the middle with
25 seconds showing on the clock.
The Lions' 20-yard field goal
was scored by Errol Mann in the
fourth quarter.
The Lions took their 14-6 half-
time lead with about three min-
utes left in the second quarter
following a spectacular intercep-
tion by Lem Barney.
Barney snagged Tom Flores' pass
on the Lions' 18 and scrambled
diagonally across the field, fall-

ing finally at the Buffalo 10 after
absorbing several solid blows.
Three plays later Bill Munson,
who was booed during the first
half for his poor throwing, hit
Charlie Sanders up the middle for
a touchdown. Mann, who earlier.
missed a field goal shot from 10
yards out, kicked the extra point.
The Lions scored first when Mel
Farr cut over right guard for a
40-yard touchdown which resulted
from Farr's 31-yard run two plays
before and a 37-yard pass from
Munson to Earl McCullough.
Simpson registered just 12 sec-
onds of play during the first half
and didn't handle the ball.
However, he was an effective
diversion which led to the Bills'
touchdown in the first quarter.
On that play, Simpson cut out to
the left while quarterback Flores
spotted Haven Moses in the end
zone and completed the 20-yard
touchdown pass.
In Simpson's second-quarter ap-
pearance, a pass apparently aimed
for him fell incomplete behind
his back as he moved downfield.

Here come 'da judge
The above scene in no way resembles the U.S. south. Though the characters are not fictional, the
situation is. The Orioles set up a kangaroo court after each victory. Here, Frank Robinson is the
be-mopped magistrate and Dave Johnson is the defendant. The charges are never too clear, but the
fines are-usually one dollar. The money goes into a kitty for a post-season party. The pot is now
about $500.

DAYTON, Ohio OP)-Ray Floyd,
brash and cocky, charged into the
second round lead in the PGA Na-
tional Championship yesterday,
obscure Don Bies shot a course
record 64 and Arnold Palmer
quietly head'ed home to the roll-
ing hills of Western Pennsylvania,
his golfing future clouded and
uncertain.
"This is not retirement," Pal-
mer insisted after withdrawing
because of a hip ailment. "I'll be
back.
"Bait I won't play again until
this hip heals properly, I have no
idea how long that may be."

Floyd, a 26-year-old bachelor,I
was one of nine tied for the first
round lead at 69 but he broke that
logjam with a 66 for 135, seven-
under par for 36 holes on the de-
manding 6,915-yard, par-71 NCR
Country Club course.
Bies, 3, a long-time club pro
in Seattle, Wash., is in his first
full year on the tour. His 64-de-
spite a double bogey six on the
first hole-broke the record of -65
set just hours earlier by Gary
Player and left Bies with a 138
and very much in contention for
his first tour victory.
Player, the little South African

who is gunning for a second PGA
title, had eight birdies, two bogeys
and nine one-putt greens in his
remarkable round.
"The two rounds I've played
here are the finest two rounds
I've played this year," said Player,
already winner of more than
$100,000 this year.
He had a 36-hole total of 136,
just one back of Floyd and one
ahead of drawling Bunky Henry,
the former Georgia Tech place-
kicker who had a second round 68.
Jack Nicklaus and U.S. Open
title-holder Orville Moody follow-
ed at 138, each after shooting a 68.
Floyd, who has been on the
tour since 1963, won both the
American Golf Classic and the
Jacksonville Open earlier this
year and is having his best sea-
son financially with almost $75,-
000 in winnings.
