Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 I 'I BALTIMORE (M)-Baltimore's Jim Palmer, continuing his amaz- ing comeback following another spell on the disabled list, hurled a no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics as the Orioles won, 8-0 last night. The 23-year-old right-hander, a 1966 World Series hero who was virtually useless the past two sea- sons, struck out eight and walked six-three in the ninth-as he brought his record to 11-2 with the first American League no-hit- ter in more than a year. Palmer rapped a single and double, driving in one run. He also walked to ignite a five-run Balti- more rally in the seventh inning off relievers Vida Blue and George Lauzerique, which was capped by B r o o k s Robinson's three-run hoper. Don Buford had three hits for the Orioles, scoring twice and driving in two runs. He trippled off loser Chuck Dobson, 13-9, to open the Baltimore first and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Blair. Palmer made a fast start in 1969 after recovering from assorted back and shoulder miseries which limited his activity to 120 innings the past two seasons-most of it in the minor leagues. Sailing along with a 9-2 record, daily sports NIGHT EDITOR: JIM FORRESTER he went back on the disabled list June 29 because of a torn muscle in his back. He returned to active duty last Saturday night, hurling six in- nings in a 5-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. The triumph over Oakland was his eighth in a row and lowered his earned run average to 1.77. The Orioles didn't have any difficult chances in the field, but center fielder Balir was charged, with an error when he dropped Dobson's third-inning fly in shal- low center after a long run. . Shortstop Bobby Floyd, subbing for injured Mark Belanger, muf- fed Bert Campaneris' grounder in the sixth when he tried a pick- up on the short hop. The no-hitter was the fourth in the major leagues this season, and the first in the American League since Oakland's Catfish Hunter pitched a perfect game May 8, 1968. The previous no-hitters this season were hurled by Bill Stone- man of Montreal, Jim Maloney of Cincinnati and Don Wilson of Houston. Reggie Jackson opened the ninth with his third walk of the game. Then Sal Bando lined out and Danny Cater forced Jackson with Bob Floyd bobbling the ball momentarily, eliminating any chance of the dbuble play.I After Dick Green swung and missed at the first two pitchces, he worked Palmer for a walk and then Tom Reynolds also walked, loading the bases. That brought up Larry Haney, a former batterymate of Palmer's, who rolled into the game-ending force out, clinching the no-hitter. Two other Baltimore pitchers had no-hitters ruined this year in the ninth inning by Cesar To- var of Minnesota. Tovar ended a bid by Dave McNally with one out in the ninth on May 15 and he led off the final inning last Sunday with a hit off Mike Cuel- lar. The last Baltimore no-hitter was pitched April 27, 1968, by Tom Phoebus against the Bos- ton Red Sox. FOR RENT WANTED - 1 roommate for 6 roomI house, campus area. Own bdrm. BASEBALL CZAR Kuhn signs for seven years 1969 23Ctc NOW RENTING FOR FALL Choice Apartments 1 SEATTLE OP)-Bowie Kuhn was elected commissioner of baseball yesterday for a period of seven years and a salary higher than any paid previously for the holder of that office. Kuhn received $100,000 a year under a temporary contract he received last February. Warren Giles, president of the National League, made the an- nouncement, flanked by Kuhn and American League president Joe Cronin. Asked about the salary, Giles said the matter was "under dis- cussion. I will say that it is to be more than any commissioner ever received-more than I thought one would ever get." Asked if it was considerably higher than the $100,000 figure of Kuhn's pro tem contract, Giles CSU students demand cuts 1in varsity footal1 program DENVER, Colo (IP) - Students at Colorado State University cal- led yesterday for a cutback in the football program including fewer athletic scholarships, fewer coach- es, withdrawal from the Western Athletic Conference and restric- tion of travel for games to the Colorado area. The program was presented in a letter from t h e Associated Stu- dents of the university to the Col- orado Legislature's Budget Com- mittee.- The students' suggestions were offered as a means of eliminating the deficit in the school's athletic budget. This has led to an increase this fall of the compulsory stu-' dent athletic fee from $36 a year to $60. The students called for volun- tary charges for students w h o want to attend sports events but, no charges for others. The letter said the university has suffered from "an unwise risk" taken in the building last year of a $2.5 million stadium and a decision to j o i n the Western Athletic Conference at that time. "Left with a $565,000 deficit andj a varsity football program with no realistic prospects f o r financial success," the students said in their letter, "CSU is faced with a tre- mendous athletic problem at a time when all its energies should go toward solving our academic problems." answered "yes, it is substantially above that figure." Cronin said the election of Kuhn, who got his temporary contract last February, was made by acclamation of the two leagues as they closed their summer meet- ing here. He explained the seven-year contract, saying that the owners had decided last winter on a four- year contract for the permanent commissioner. "but now, with a man of Mr. Kuhn's capability and knowledge, we decided we should make it seven years." Kuhn expressed pleasure at his election and said baseball has "one of the finest entertainment pro- ducts in the nation. We have climbed over many horizons in the past and have many more to climb over in the future." "I never felt inhibited by the one-year contract, but the seven- year term should make it easier for me to get things done. There are many things I want to do. I see principally a more positive promotion of our game." McLain blanks Angels for DETROIT (IP) - Denny McLain scattered five California hits last night to blank the Angels 3-0 and earn his 18th victory of the sea- son. Detroit's first hit off loser Jim McGlothlin, 5-12, was a fourth- inning home run by Jim North- rup, a towering blast into the upper deck in right field. It was his 14th homer of the year. The Tigers gave McLain two more runs in the fifth when Tom Matchick singled and advanced on Bill Freehan's single to right. Both runners moved un on a hunti " Foxcroft, 815 S.
