retires

Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00
LOS ANGELES (M--Handsome,
6-foot-6 Don Drysdale, the Los
Angeles Dodgers' w i n n i n g e s t
pitcher ever and holder of a major
league record with six straight
shutouts, announced yesterday his
retirement from baseball at 33.
His reason: a painful shoulder
ailment affecting his throwing
arm.
"For the good of the team," the
219-pound right-hander t o l d
newsmen, he's quitting "after a
lot of talking and soul. searching
and with deep regret.
"But like they say,, some things
are inevitable-like death, taxes
and retirement from professional
sports." C a im, shaggy-haired,'
dapper in a black suit and tie, the
approximately $100,000-a-y e a-r
athlete spoke softly in Dodger
Stadium's posh Stadium Club.
Doctors, he said, have told him
he has in his shoulder a torn
"rotary cuff . . . what gets your
arm into position to throw and
creates elasticity." It might have
been brought ' on "by wear and
tear over the years"-15, of them
in baseball, 14 with the Dodgers.
Big Don, last survivor of the,
old Brooklyn Dodgers roster, bow-
ed out amid . news conference
plaudits including owner Walter
O'Malley's "he's one of the great
all-time stars." National League
president Warren 0. Giles, en
route to loop meetings in Seattle,
said "the retirement of Don is
a loss to baseball."
Dodger vice president Arthur E.
Rod 'Patterson opened the news
conference, saying, -"We have an
announcement we're not partic-
ularly happy to make-let the big
guy make it."
Drysdale said he, had enjoyed
his association with the Dodgers
and added: ",I owe a lot to base-
ball. It's given me everything I
have, including my wife, daughter
and everything else." He met his
wife Ginger when she, then a
model, posed for newspaper sports-
section photos with Dodger play-
ers. Their daughter, Kelly Gene,
is 10.
Donald Scott Drysdale, a native!
of suburban Van Nuys, where he
still lives, broke in with the
Dodgers in Brooklyn in 1956 after
only two years -in the minors.
He leads the Dodgers in most'
victories, 209; most innings pit-
ched, 3,432; most strikeouts,
2,486, and most shutouts, 49.
Last season he set major league
records with six straight shut-
outs and 58 2-3 consecutive score-
less innings.
Since he joined the Dodgers,
the team has won five National
League pennants and three World
Series.
Drysdale led the National
League in strikeouts three times:
242 in 1959, 246 in 1960 and 232
in 1962. He is tied with Sandy
Koufax and Bob Gibson with six

Drysdale and Koufax staged
their famed dual holdout after
winning the 1965 World Series.
Don finally settled for a reported
$105,000 and Koufax for $200,000.
Koufa'x retired after the 1966
season because of arthritis in his
throwing elbow.

the recurring shoulder trouble.
The problem began last season
after he had become known as
an iron man who iever niissed
his turn in rotation.
He was placed on the disabled
list last April 22 in hope that
rest would cure the ailment. He
returned but was sidelined again
in early July. He came back July
27 but a few days and three
games later found he couldn't per-
form with his usual skill.!
Might he pitch next year if the1
arms feels all right? "I couldn't1
say. At this moment, I would have
to say no."
Might he stay with the Dodgers
Drysdale said he has an oppor-
tunity with Upton Enterprises, a
California conglomerate of which
he is a vice president, "but I'd say
all doors are open." Besides his
business interest, Don owns race
horses.
Dodger manager Walter Alston
told newsmen: "I hate to see this
guy retire, but whatever he does
I want to be in his corner. He's
played as great a part in my suc-
cess in winning a few pennants as
any other individual."
Dodger vice president Al Cam-
panis said 24 players are left on
the team, and "we have a couple
of irons in the fire to help the-
pitching. These would be waiyer
situations."
Fellow Dodger pitcher Claude
Osteen:a"'The best thing we can
do to show Don we appreciate
him is to go out and win the pen-
nant this year. I think we can."
Second baseman Ted Sizemore:
"It's been probably the greatest
thrill of my life to play on the
same team with Don Drysdale."
Coach Jim Gilliam, ex-Dodger
infielder: "As a guy who retired
a few years ago, I know what
Don's going through. I've never
seen him quit on the mound. He
gave all he had."
Drysdale was asked ,to name the
greatest thrill as a Dodger.
"The first day at Vero Beach,
Fla.," he said. "Putting on a
Dodger uniform with Snyder, Rob-
inson, Campanella, Furillo, Reese,
Newcombe. I'll never forget that."

LONDON W)-Members of the
U.S. track and field team cabled
President Nixon last night asking
for government intervention to re-
vive American amateur athletics.
The Americans, who are in Lon-
don for a two-day match against
Britain starting today did not
reveal the text of the message to
the President.
But at a news conference they
listed these demands:
A national training center.
A new system of selecting coach-
es for the national team.
Opening up of college equipment
to all athletes holding an Ama-
teur Athletic Union card.
Help for athletes to tour with
the national team overseas.
George Frenn, hammer thrower
from North Hollywood, Calif.,
said: "If things are not put right,
our prespects at the Munich Olym-
pics in 1972 are zero."
The cable to President Nixon
asked him to send a representative
to meet athletes at a meet at
South Lake Tahoe, Calif.'
The Americans delegated seven
members of, the team to talk to
newsmen.
They talked mostly about the
difficulty of athletes in getting use
of equipiment controlled by the
National Collegiate Athletic Asso-
ciation.
Frenn, who is 27, said: "This
equipment is closed to athletes
who are members of the colleges
-that is to anyone over 21.
"The average age of American
national teams is well over 21,
and it is increasing."
Marew Seidler, former U.S.
women's shot put champion, said:
"We have , many fine facilities.
We would like to see them open
to anybody, who wants to use
them."
Nick Lee, hurdler from Balti-
more, calling for a national train-
ing center, said: "The prestige and
superiority of the U.S. teams are
diminishing,
"'That was evident in the recent
Europe vs. United States match."
i Mrs. Doris Brown, 800 meters
specialist from Seattle, said many
athletes who ought to be on the
U.S. touring team were left at
home.
"We feel these people should
be helped to participate," Mrs.
Brown said. "We don't have our
best possible team.",
Gerry Lindgren, long distance
runner from South Lake Tahoe,
said selection of coaches depended
too much on seniority and AAU
patronage.
The seven spokesmen claimed
the letter to President Nixon had
the unanimous support of the U.S.
team.i

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. ()-
0. J. Simpson arrived at the Buf-
falo Bills training camp last night
following a wild reception at the
airport and said, "I hope the game'
in Detroit' isn't going' to be as
rough as the reception here."
Simpson, whose reported con-
tract for more than $300,000 makes
him the highest paid rookie since
the mergerof the National Amer-
ican Football Leagues, will make
his pro debut at Detroit in an ex-
hibition game against the Lions
Friday night.
But more people got their hands
on him at the Buffalo airport on
his arrival from Los Angeles than
are likely to get their hands on
him in that game, some 2,0001
screaming, shoving autograph-
seeking fans surging onto the field.
to meet Simpson's plane.
Plans were called for the Bills
to whisk Simpson away in a pri-
vate car driven by a state trooper,
but it, took a; police escort to get
Simpson and the Bills party head-
ed out of the airport and toward
the training camp on the Niagara
UJniversity campus.
