Page Four THE MICHIGAN DAILY A, n I n&M ., Zoturcioy, rAugust '9, 1 9b9O ' THE PRtPS: Basketball hints merger For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 NEW YORK (P) -- Walter Ken- nedy, commissioner of the Nation- al Basketball Association, said yesterday owners of the NBA and the American Basketball Associa- tion, have held. discussions that "ultimately might lead to a mer- ger.- The NBA head said that three owners of NBA and ABA teams met both Thursday night and yes- .terday with attorneys represent- ing both circuits. As a result of these meetings, Kennedy said, he and James Gardner, president of the ABA and owner of the loop's Carolina cougars, issued a joint statement. The statement said, "Walter Kennedy, commissioner of the Na- tional Basketball Association, and James Gardner, president of the American Basketball Association, announced today that they and their attorneys have begun ex- ploring the possibility of cooper-' ative arrangements between the two basketball leagues. "The form of s u c h arrange- ments have not been agreed upon but it is hoped that they will be shaped to conform to the needs of the various cities in the leagues as well as to any applicable law." Kennedy said the threelowners who represented the NBA during the meetings were Ned Irish of the New York Knicks, Sam Schul- man of Seattle and Richard Block of Phqenlix. Kennedy said that Gardner and Ray Boe of the New York Nets and Joseph Gear of Dallas represented the ABA. "As far as I'm concerned, there'll be nothing further done at this time," Kennedy said. "We're look- ing into it. We talked about sev- eral possibilities that ultimately' might lead to a merger." The ABA, which will be starting its third year of operation, suf- ered severe setbacks within the past few months when Lew Al- cindor, the sensational UCLA All- American, signed with Milwaukee of the NBA and Connie Hawkins, an ABA star at Minnesota, jumped daily sports NIGHT EDITOR: JIM FORRESTER to Phoenix of the older circuit. Alcindor signed for $1.4 million and Hawkins reportedly got $250,- 000 plus $30,000 a year for life. Part of the amount was for drop- ping his $6 million monopoly suit against the NBA which had barred him for alleged participation in a gambling scandal. The NBA has teams in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cin- cinnati, Detroit, Los Angeles, Mil- waukee, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Fran- cisco and Seattle. The ABA is represepted in Indiana, Kentucky, Nw York, New Orleans, Dallas, ILos Angeles, Denver, Carolina, Pittsburgh, Miami, Fla. and Oak- land. Minnesota moved to Pitts- burgh and Houston to Carolina since the close of last season. Gardner is heading the ABA which is seeking a successor to George Mikan, who resigned as commissioner last month. The young circuit, which has no na- tional television contract, is also expected to move its league offices from Minneapolis to New York. NFL secures permission, to use Big Ten gridirons HELP WANTED? (M) --The Big Ten approved yesterday the use for National Football League games of the University of Minnesota's Memorial Stadium by the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, Oct. 5 and Northwestern Uni- versity's Dyche - Stadium by the Chicago Bears Sunday, Oct. 12. The exception to the confer- ence rule against use of campus facilities by pro sports teams was granted by the athletic directors, contingent upon baseball's Min- nesota Twins being involved in an American League playoff and the Chicago Cubs reaching the World Series. The door was opened to such action at the conference spring meeting in Lafayette, ,,Ind., last May, when the league modified its anti-pro sports ban to allow for special cases. The Vikings normally play at Metropolitan Stadium, Blooming- ton, Minn., home of the Twins. The Bears' home arena is Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs. A conference spokesman said "a substantial rental factor" also figured in the conference decision. Many of the athletic depart- ments in the Big Ten have had trouble in recent years in making financial ends meet. And though the Big Ten relaxed its rules. to give a helping hand to local pro clubs, the major reason for the rule change is financial. At the same time, requests were denied for exhibition game use of Wisconsin's field house and North- western's McGaw Hall by the Mil- waukee Bucks and the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association. The Vikings' NFL opponent Oct. 5 are the - Green Bay Packers, Oct. 12 will mark the home opener for the Bears, facing the Vikings after Chicago plays, three straight road games at Green Bay, St. Louis and New York. The Big Ten action came at a summer session of the directors and faculty representatives on this resort island. Rejection of requests for use of conference basketball arenas, the spokesman said, was based on the fact there was no conflict for use of other NBA facilities. The Mil- waukee Bucks this season are un- veiling superstar Lew Alcindor, who led UCLA to three straight NCAA titles. , ~ $50 per person and up 761-8055 FA LL.--- .- FREE-LANCE PHOTOGRAPHER seeks ANY kind of photo work, Call Rich- ard Lee, 764-6675, 764-0553, 764-0561.
