Page Four THE MICHIGAN DAILY Fr dnv Augusit' 8.1969 , --_ ..yl WOMEN'S RIGHTS: Congressman demands investigation of baseball For Direct Classified Ad Service. Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 I WASHINGTON (P) - A New York congressman said yesterday he would urge an investigation of organized baseball in the wake of the sport's refusal to make Bernice Gera its first woman umpire. "Due to the conduct of baseball in this matter, which tends to be illegal," said Rep. Mario Biaggi, a Democrat, "there might be other areas that also are illegal." Biaggi said Mrs. Gera, a 38- year-old Jackson Heights, N.Y., housewife, was denied an umpire's job in the Class A New -York- Pennsylvania League solely on the basis of her sex. He said refusal by Phillip Piton, head of the minor leagues, to ap- prove Mrs. Gera's contract, was "devious, dilatory and cruel." Biaggi, who said he is represent- ing Mrs. Gera as a "friend, con- gressman and attorney without Woman ,gets into. Yale press box NEW HAVEN, Conn. (A) - A woman sportswriter will report on, the Aug. 17 professional football exhibition from the previously male-only press box at Yale Bowl. ,n attorney for, Elinor Kaine announced yesterday that the Su- perior Court suit filed by the woman, aimed at gaining admis- sion to the press box for the New York Giants-New York Jets game, ended in an out-of-court agree- ment by all parties that she be admitted. The out-of-court settlement had been announced Wednesday, but whether or not Miss Kaine would be allowed into the press box was not made public until after attor- ney Allan R. Johnson of Bridge- port, Conn., met with court rep- resentatives to report the agree- meet yesterday.. Miss Kaine writes a syndicated column called Football and the Single Girl. She filed her suit July 28, seeking $25,000 damages and a court injunction to allow her to cover the game under the s a m e circumstances as male sportswriters. Defendants in the suit were Yale University, the Giants and Jets football teams and Bill Guthrie, New Haven Journal- Courier sports editor, who handled press arrangements for the game.a Johnson said the 196'? graduate of Smith College was told a month ago she could not be admitted be- cause a male-only tradition had been- established in the press box, and because there are open rest room facilities there. She said in the suit that denial of a press box seat to a woman sportswriter would be a violation of the equal opportunity aspects of federalu'and state civil rights laws, and a violation of the fed- eral constitution's 14th amend- ment guarantee of "equal protec- tion of the law." daily sports NIGHT EDITOR: JIM FORRESTER fee, filed a complaint Wednesday on her behalf with the Nqw York commission on human rights in an effort to get organized baseball to honor the woman's contract or pay damages. Last year Mrs. Gera filed a complaint with the state commis- sion after the New York-Penn League refused to give her a con- tract.. After negotiation, however, the league relented, signed her to a contract and assigned her to work a game Aug. 1 in Auburn, N.Y. Before she left last week, Piton sent her a telegram saying he had disapproved her contract. "I love baseball so much that I wouldn't want to do anything to hurt it," Mrs. Gera said at a news conference with Biaggi. "But I am a certified umpire and I want to be a part of the sport." Rep. Martha W. Griffiths (D- Mich), who sponsored an amend- ment to bar sex discrimination under the equal opportunities act, said she believed the action was a blatant violation of the law. "The only reason she was not allowed to become an umpire," Mrs. Griffiths said, "was because she is a woman. It's really foolish." Biaggi said he would ask for a Congressional investigation of or- ganized baseball whether or not Mrs. Gera wins her battle. "Baseball is no longer the sport we all knew it was," he said. "Baseball has been reduced to a fiscal asset like any other business. "Conglomerates have b o u g h t teams. Gambling interest have be- come involved. It is no longer ac- ceptable to the public as it was when it was in its pure form." PERSONAL WANTED-Thrill-seeking female singer for established jug band. DOWNTOWN HONDA 310 E. Washington 665-8637 13Ztc NO CONTROL OF PLAYERS Skinner quits Philly's Phis Ambassador Company 736 Packard 761-7982 390tc PHILADELPHIA ()-A g im- faced Bob Skinner, his voice trembling, announced his resigna- tion yesterday as manager of the National L e a g u e Philadelphia Phillies because of what ,he called "'lack of- support from the front office." John Quinn, general manager, said coach George Myatt had been offered the managerial post for the remainder of the season. Myatt, reached at Reading, Pa., where the Phils went to play an exhibition with their Eastern League farm club, quickly accepted' the post. Quinn said Skinner's action caught the club by suprise. " All he told us was that under the present conditions, he did not feel like continuing on the Job," Quinn said. The 37-year-old Skinner, who has not been able to turn the Phil- lies around from their losing ways, ended 14 months as field manager. "The straw that broke the camel's back was the handling of' Rich Allen," he said. Allen, the Phillies temperament- al star slugger, has openly rebuffed Skinner and carried all his dis- agrements, including suspensions and fines, to owner Bob Carpenter. Skinner told a hastily summoned news conference there is no way in my opinion that a manager can win in Philadelphia without hav- ing complete control of all players, without exception." Skinner, who played for 12 years with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis in the National League before retiring as a player in 1966, came to the Phillies from San Diego where he had piloted that team to the Pacific Coast League pennant in 1967. In his 14 months with the Phil- lies, Skinner saw the club lose 123 games while winning 93. The Phils are currently mired in fifth place in the six-team eastern division, 242 games out of first place. "I feel we've done a great job," Skinner said. "But I have too much pride. I am a winner and I want to be with a winner, and you can't win this way. "Allen has been a big factor in our losing and there is very defi- nitely disharmony on the club." Carpenter said he regretted Skinner's action, and denied that he ever interfered with the op- eration of the team on the field. He acknowledge, however, that he had stepped in frequently to try to cool down Allen's rebellious moments. "Whatever I did in the Allen case, I did for the benefit of the Philadelphia ball club," Carpenter said. Allen was suspended for nearly a month after he missed two ball games in New York. Skinner said that fines that he had imposed for that absence were canceled by Carpenter. The owner said he couldn't recall exactly what happened and then sought to cut off all further com- ment on Allen "because this is Skinner's day." "I am terribly sorry he (Skinner) feels like this," Carpenter said. "But if he feels this way, he did the correct thing. When you don't like what your bosses do, you should resign. That's the only fair thing to do." Skinner said he had immediate plans except -to return to his fam- ily in Californa. Carpenter said that as far as Allen is concerned- and there have been rumors that the club planned to trade him after this season-"I will not make any commitment at this time, but he's going to have to abide by all the rules and regulations."
