-1 Rage Four THE MICHIGAN DAILY Thursday, August 7. 1969 I FOR $100 THOU: Johnson inks contract For Direct Classified Ad Service. Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 CHICAGO (P) - Ron Johnson, Michigan's fabulous halfback, has agreed to sign a two-year contract for a total of, $100,000 as No. 1 draft choice of the Cleveland Browns, his dissenting negotiating agent disclosed yesterday. Arthur Morse, Chicago attorney who also represents Leroy Keyes of Purdue, a first-round holdout of the Philadelphia Eagles, report- ed that Johnson accepted a $50,000 bonus and will receive $25,000 salary for each of his first two seasons. Morse said he would decline any fee as the result of Johnson's ac- cepting what Morse termed an un- satisfactory contract. "Johnson phoned me last night and said he just couldn't stand the heat and intended to sign a Cleveland contract today," said Morse. "I could not, in all con- science, be a party to the contract offered by Art Modell, the Browns' president." MAJOR LEAGUE STANDINGS AMERICAN LEAGUE Eastern Division W L Pct. "Modell insisted upon, and did get, a mortgage for $25,000 on the second year of the boy's football life," said Morse. Johnson, 21, 205-pound pros- pect for the fullback post vacated with the retirement of Ernie Green, said he was pleased with the contract and now would con- centrate on making the team. He left immediately for the Browns' training camp at Miriam College to participate in the Wed- nesday afternoon drill. He said he had kept himself in good physical shape with regular workouts dur- ing the spring and summer. Morse, who negotiated con- tracts for Dick Butkus with the Chicago Bears and Jim Grabow- sko with the Green Bay Packers, said he had recommended John- son sign for one year "for certain" at $125,000 or a pact open for la- ter signing for two or three sea- sons on a no-cut basis. "The amount Johnson is signing for is reasonable, but not high enough for one of t h e greatest players ever turned out by Michi- gan," said Morse. "I h a v e obtained better con- tracts for second and third round players, including Iowa's Ed Po- dolak, signed this year by Kansas City Chiefs, and Johnny Wright of Illinois, drafted last year by the Atlanta Falcons. Morse said Modell was quoted in :the press as saying a player doesn't need a bargaining repre- sentative, that, a player's father could do as well. "I'm not criticizing Modell," said Morse. "If Johnson's father could do as well, why should I take a fee? But his father could not do any worse." Regarding Keyes' holdout with the Eagles, Morse said: "It's a battle to t h e finish. I consider Keyes the second b e s t running bacl in the country behind 0. J. Simpson. I feel he should get a reasonable contract." HELP WANTED HELP WANTED to distribute flyers during Registration. The victory upped Perry's rec- ord to 13-4, the second highest win total of his 11-year career. He re- tired the side in order in seven inniings and Detroit's only threat produced a run in the second on a double by Willie Horton and a single by Tom Matchick. Mickey Lolich, 14-5, started for Detroit and lost his third in a row. BALTIMORE -- Curt Motton's two-run pinch homer with two out in the eighth inning gave the Baltimore Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals last night. The homer, Motton's second of the season, ruined a superb per- formance by left# Jim Rooker, 2-9, , who had allowed only four hits to that point and hadn't permitted an Oriole runner past first base. Andy Etchebarren singled with one out, and Motton batted for winner Mike Cuellar, 14-9. The only run off Cuellar scored in the fourth on a triple by Lou Piniella, which left fielder Don Buford misjudged or lost in the lights, followed by a balk. Cuellar then walked Ed Kirk- patrick and yielded a single to Joe Foy, setting the stage for a triple play started by third baseman Brooks Robinson on a ground ball hit by Ellie Rodriguez. Robinson stepped on third to force Kirkpatrick, tossed to second baseman Dave Johnson to retire Foy and.the relay to first was scooped out of the dirt by Boog Powell. The triple play was the fourth in the majors this season-two in each league. $50 per person and up FOR SALE-Complete 6 yr. collection 761-8055 of PLAYBOY - Perfect cond.
