Phone 764-o557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 PERSONAL I I rww --k.- By The Associated Press HOUSTON -- Bill Hands and Phil Regan tamed the Houston Astros on seven hits and the Chi- cago Cubs padded their East divi- sion lead with a 5-2 victory last night. Hands, 13-8, yielded six hits in 6% innings for his fourth straight victory and eighth in nine deci- sions. Regan rescued him with two on and two out in the seventh for his 13th save. He was touched for Norm Miller's third homer in the eighth.; The victory raised the Cubs' lead to 7% games over the New York Mets, who split a double- header at Cincinnati. Successive doubles by Randy Hundley and Jim , Hickman and Hands' run-scoring single got the Cubs away to a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Denny Le- master, 8-11. Another run scored in the third when Billy Williams and Ron Santo singled and Ernie Banks hit into a double play. Hundley singled and c a m e around on Don Young's double and a wild pitch by' reliever Dooley Womack in the sixth and Williams singled and Banks doubled for the final run in the seventh as the Cubs' won their sixth straight. Marty Martinez singled in a Houston run in the sixth. * * * CINCINNATI - New York ex- ploded for eight runs in the third inning and Nolan Ryan put a clamp on Cincinnati's power hit- ters with a seven-hitter as the Mets crushed the Reds 10-1 in the nightcap of their twi-night doubleheader yesterday. The Reds grabbed the opener. MAJOR LEAGUEr STANDINGS AMERICAN LEAGUE Eastern Division W L Pct. The split dropped the Reds into second place in the National League West, one percentage point and one-half game behind San Francisco, which took two from Philadelphia. * * * Royals rubbed out BALTIMORE - Brooks Robin- son walloped his 17th homer of the season with one on in the 10th inning, sending the Balti- more Orioles to a 7-5 victory over the Kansas City/ Royals last night. Frank Robinson had opened the 10th against Galen Cisco, 1-1, with a single, his fourth hit of the game. After Boog Powell struck out, Brooks connected. A home run by Buck Martinez gave Kansas City a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth, but Frank Rob- inson's 28th homer tied it 5-5 in the bottom of the inning. The Royals pulled into a 4-4 deadlock in the seventh with two runs, the first on Jackie Hernan- dez' homer. When the next hitter walked, Dick Hall relieved starter Jim Hardin and yielded singles by Paul Schaal and Joe Keough for another run. Clay Dalrymple's sacrifice fly scored the first Baltimore run in the second. Paul 'Blair hit his 23rd homer following Joe Foy's error for two runs in the third and Frank Robinson tripled and scored on Boog Powell's sacrifice fly. Foy and starter Roger Nelson singled in runs for Kansas City in the second. Expos swept MONTREAL - Orlando Cepeda crashed a three-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Atlanta Braves a 4-3 victory over Mon- treal and a sweep of their twi- night doubleheader yesterday. The Braves won the opener 1-0 and snapped a five-game losing s t r e a k on Gary Sutherland's throwing error with two out in the ninth. Cepeda's 17th homer-of the sea- son off reliever Mike .Wegener wiped out a 3-1 lead the Expos had grabbed in the sixth on a triple by Sutherland, Ron Fairly's single and Mack Jones' 20th homer, Wegener, 4-9, had just come in to pitch when Hank Aaron reach- ed safely on Coco Laboy's error and Rico Carty, who homered in the second for Atlanta's first run, outlegged an infield hit.. Cepeda then unloaded his homer into the left field bleachers. Jim Britton and Gary Waslew- ski were locked in a scoreless duel through eight innings of the opener. Tony Gonzalez opened the ninth with a single, only the fourth hit off Waslewski. Aaron flied out but Carty walked. Ce- peda then, bounced to shortstop Bobby Wine, who flipped to Sutherland, forcing pinch runner Mike Lum. But Sutherland's relay sailed past first, allowing Gonzalez to score. Britton, 6-2, hurled a six-hitter and retired Bob Bailey on an in- field pop with two men on base for the final out. JOAN IS COMING! 19F63 CLONARA Nursery School and Kinder- garten. But the disgruntled team mem- bers demonstrated continuing dis- satisfaction with the AAU's organ- ization of the current European tour by taping over the AAU in- signia on their warm-up suits. They said they were particularly upset by theteam's hotel accom- modations in Augsburg, where they took the lead over West German national team last night In the first of a two-day meet. John Cole, top discus thrower on the team, told a newsman the decision to compete in London was reched after the AAU spon- sors agreed to let Bob Beamon, the world record holding broad mon and Power cases," Cole said speaking for most of the team's 43 members. Some 35 were count- ed at a gripe session earlier where the boycott threat was drawn up. "Olan Cassel, AAU secretary, told me the AAU had been plan- ning to send Beamon home any- way," Cole added. Beamon watched last, night's contest from the sidelines after U.S. Head Coach Alex Francis scratched him from the line-up. Beamon, Francis said, was suf- fering from the after-effects of dental surgery and has personal problems. Neal Steinhauer, team co-cap-I tain, said tape will remain on uniforms tonight in "silent protest against unsatisfactory treatment on the trip." Steinhauer added that Ameri- can men and women track and field athletes will discuss the grievances further during their meet in London. She said she was speaking for three- quarters of the American women's team. At their earlier meeting, the athletes also had asked for a voice! in the selection of team coaches; a raise of the $2 daily allowance to $10 and a complete redefinition of the word amateur. Dan Ferris, the AAU's repre- sentative to the International Amateur Athletic Federation, said he believed the athletes statement was "stimulated by people at home fighting the AAU." The former AAU secretary also said that "I believe the meeting today was an outgrowth of dis- satisfaction with the hotel ac- commodations in Stuttgart." Ferris said some athletes resent-' ed the housing conditions in both Stuttgart and Augsburg "and this rolled up into a big snowball." 43Cte SHORE VIEW APTS.
