FOAM RUBiBER BATS:
Twins dismantl
By The Associated Press
DETROIT - Rick Renick and
Tom Tishinski dyove in two runs
apiece as. the Minnesota 'Twins
broke loose for five runs in the
first inning and went on to whip
Detroit 7-1 last night.
The Twins' 28th victory in 36
games boosted their lead over
Oakland in the American League
West to three games.
Minnesota took advantage of
first-inning wildness on the part
of rookie Mike Kilkenny, 1-2,
making his second major league
start.
Kilkenny walked Cesar Tovar to
start the game and Rod Carew's
bunt single and a walk to' Harmon
Killeprew loaded the bases. Tony
Oliva's grounder got one run home
and Kilkenny struck out Bob Al-
lison for the second out.
But he walked Leo Cardenas,
refilling the bases, and Renick.
promptly doubled inside third and
Tishinski singled for two more
runs. The Twins added single runs
in the fifth when Carew walked,
stole second and scored on Kille-

Tovar's single, stolen base and a

.Starter Bob Miller, 4-4, went 7I/3
innings for the Twins and yielded
a run in the third on Don Wert's
;single, an infield out and Mickey
Stanley's double.

HOUSTON - Randy Hundley
drove in four runs, Glenn Beckert
rapped out five hits and Ferguson
Jenkins hurled a four-hitter as
the Chicago Cubs crushed Houston
9-3 last night and opened up a
seven-game lead in the National
League East.
It was the Cubs' fifth consecu-
tive triumph - second-place New
York lost at Cincinnati-but was
marred by an injury to slugging
third baseman Ron Santo, who
was hit on the left hand by a
pitch from Tom Griffin in the
first inning and left the game.
X-rays showed no fracture.
The loss, was Houston's second
after an eight-game winning
streak and dropped the fifth-
place Astros three games behind
Cincinnati in the torrid NL West.

a two-run double behind Jerry
Robertson's eight-hit pitching and

tigers
the Montreal Expos handed the
Atlanta Braves their fifth straight
loss 7-1 last night.
Robertson, 3-9, struck out six
and walked one and didn't allow a
runner past first base until Or-
land Cepeda hit his 300th career
homer with two out in the ninth.
A walk and a single followed be-
fore Robertson retired Bob Till-
man.
Staub belted his 18th homer
over the right centerfield fence
off George Stone, 9-7, in the first
inning following a walk to Gary
Sutherland, starting the Expos to
only their second victory in nine
games.

WASHINGTON W) - A con-
gressman said yesterday efforts to
ban women baseball umpires is
like trying to ban women jockeys
-it doesn't work.
"In fact," said Rep. Samuel S.1
Stratton (D-NY), "it's a violation;
of the 1964 civil rights act, which
prohibits discrimination on the f
basis of sex."
Stratton asked both Atty. Gen.
John N. Mitchell and the Federal
Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission to investigate what
he said was the last-minute can-
cellation of a contract by the Na-
tional Association of Professional
Baseball Leagues with Mrs. Ber-
nice Gera of New York.
Mrs. Gera was scheduled to um-.
pire a minor league baseball gameI
in Auburn, N.Y., Friday night in
what was to be her debut as pro-
fessional baseball's first female
umpire.
But, Stratton said, the minor
league organization canceled the
contract at the last minute "with-
out any justification."
"Inprofessional baseball as in
many other sports today as in-
creasingly large number of paying
fans are women," Stratton told
his colleagues on the House floor.
"The horse racing industry has
realized the futility of trying to
ban women jockeys; and it is fool-
ish of organized baseball to think
it can succeed where horse racing
has failed."

NEW YORK (I)-Quarterback
Joe Namath of the New York Jets
said in a magazine article yester-
day that he was being followed
by agents of the Federal Bureau
of Investigation during last sea-
son and had a visit from the FBI
at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.. the week
before last January's Super Bowl.
John F. Malone, assistant di-
rector in charge of the FBI's New
York office, said "there's not one,
scintilla of truth to any of Na-'
math's statement regarding tele-
phone taps, the FIBI following him
or investigating him."
In an article written for True
Magazine with author Dick Schaap
and released yesterday, Namath
said the Super Bowl visit had
resulted from a threat against his
life on the Jets' previous visit to
Miami.
Namath said the agent called
the visit a routine checkup. "If
he shoots you," Namath qouted
the agent as saying, "he can't
possibly get away."
"That really made me feel a
lot better," said Namath.
"I've got to admit that I'm not
one of the biggest fans of the FBI
these days,"" Namath continued.
"I mean, I don't mind them tap-
ping my phones. I don't even mind
them playing the tapes for every
tourist who walks into their of-
fices. I just wish to hell that
they'd pay their share of the
They just checkied my bank de-
posits.
"I don't blame them, I guess.
I don't really know very much
about gambling . . . but I've been
told some people do bet on profes-
sional football games. Guys kid
me now and then, 'C'mon Joe, you
want to make $50,000 this week-
end?' and I kid them right back,
'who do I have to kill?' and they
just laugh. They're only fooling
around, but sometimes the FBI
doesn't have any sense of humor."
The article, in the September
issue of True, is an excerpt from
the forthcoming book "I Can't
Wait Until Tomorrow Cause
I Get Better Looking Every Day,"
written by Namath and'Schaap.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (YP)-Jim"
Gardner, president of the Ameri-
can Basketball Association, chal-
lenged the National Basketball
Association yesterday to a world
championship game or series be-
tween the champs of the two
leagues.
He also said he will write NBA
Commissioner Walter Kennedy to
suggest a midseason game between
all-stars from the ABA and NBA.
Gardner proposed that the firstI
championship game or series take
place before the regular season
begins this year between the Bos-
ton Celtics of the NBA and the
Oakland Oaks of-the ABA.

"that the series would continue as
a postseason playoff following
eachtseason, so that basketball,
,as other professional sports, could
have a true championship. WeI
