Although the All-Star attack, bogged down completely in the first half, the collegiate defense was superb, especially against the, Jets' running game. Pren- tice Hall, hard cover, $5,95, 244 pages. Sportswriters, especially when they try to cram their ver- biage between a pair of hard covers donated by the likes of Mc- Graw-Hill, Prentice-Hall, etc., quite often seem determined to make their material palatable {pnly to those readers whose in- telligence quotient does not run into double figures. The "For Children Only" sections of the public libraries are infested with such easy-to-remember titles as The Willie Mays Story, The Mickey Mantle Story, The Joe Diamaggio Story and so on, all of which manage to combine enough ill-conceived sports legends, obscure yearly statistics and outright sensation- alism to fill about 200 pages. The same capacity, for dullness, imitation and obscurity is also demonstrated by those who write sports fiction. Titles such as All Star Hurler, First String Quarterback and Hard Nosed Hoopster - Along with the material that follows - seem de- ,igned to appeal to the unprurient and unsophisticated tastes of those beset by a personal brain drain OF COURSE, not all sportswriters are bad novelists or bad biographers, just as not all football players use Gillette stainless steel blades or all members of the Cinncinnatti Royals treat themselves with Desenex foot powder. In fact, out of the morass of mediocrity that is the rule in book length pieces about sports have arisen some pretty fair pieces of literature. There is Doug- lass Wallop's classic The Year The Yankees Lost the Pennant (which became even more classical as the Broadway musical "Damn Yankees"); George Plimptn's venerable Paper Tiger; and Jerry Kramer's best-selling Instant Replay. In to this small and slowly expanding literary hall of fame (for sportswriters, only) steps a new book that is too new to be either classic, venerable or best-selling, but one that is well worth reading: Shirley Povich's All These Mornings. The triumph of All These Mornings lies partly in the infus- ion of what a football coach might call "spirit" into the writing of the author. In a profession in which the hackneyed is quite often the commonplace, Povich, who has recorded his impres- sions of the sports world for the last forty years as a columnist for the Washington Post, displays a refreshing creativity throughout his book. YET, DESPITE THE literary ability of this Liberace of the blue-ribboned keyboard who weaves a symphony of sports mem- ories with sprightly comments such as "They don't shoot bas- kets anymore, they stuff them, like taxidermists," the r e a 1 achievement of All These Mornings is not the way Povich writes sports, but the way he views them. Povich, through thirteen chapters of anecdotes and personal memories and a reproduction of half a dozen of the hundreds of columns he has written over the years, treats sports not just as games or contests, but as a part of a period and a slice of an era. With this view, All These Mornings becomes more than a book for the home town chauvinist with the comic book men- tality. It becomes a story not only about sports, but a story about people, life, journalism and Shirley Povich from 1920-1968. Beginning with his own Cinderella story about how he first landed a job with the Post by caddying for its publisher, Povich recalls his early days in journalism with the sentivity and humor that characterize his entire book. "Nobody had quite explained to me what a copyboy's status on a newspaper was," Povich re- calls, "but my first pay envelope seemed to indicate I was hold- ing down one of the less remunerative positions in journalism." FROM THIS INAUSPICIOUS beginning, Povich threads his way through the roaring twenties,. the thrills of covering the Senators when they were winning the pennant in 1924, and the not so lucrative years as a sportswriter during the depression when the 'Post was Washington's last place newspaper. But altough Povich spans a 48 year period with his nar- rative, his book does not evoke that stuffy sense of chronology that pervades so much of sports literature. Povich's journey into the world of real literature is a relaxed one. He is not a traveler with a preplanned itinerary, but a wanderer through time and space who stops where he sees fit. From ringside at the Jack-Dempsey-Gene Tunney fight to the World Series game where Babe Ruth supposedly "called his shot"; from the press box at. the Redskins-Eagles game when Pearl Harbor was bombed to the Pacific during World War II, where he served as a war correspondent; from the breaking of the "color line" in sports to Ted Williams' ability to hurl "spittle" at the fans and sportswriters, Povich retells some of the old stories and relates some new ones.
