Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 .FR RENT Taking time ot... to0ook at the Tigers By ERIC SIEGEL This has been a busy summer for the sports fan. Joe Namath, owner emeritus of Bachelor's III, held the sports world breathless while he decided between pikskin pitch- ing and bartending. And the "Can't Anyone Here Play This Game?" crowd out at Shea Stadium, hovering in the far off reaches of second place, still has everyone doing a double take when they glance at the National League's Eastern Division standings. Then there's been the return to baseball of the Splendid Splinter with the big stick, the Hawk's squawk about being shunted from Boston to Cleveland and, on top of it all, the 100th birthday of Abner Doubleday's invention, In track, there's been a revival of the U.S.-Russian competition and John Carlos' boasts to bust the nine second barrier in the hundred yard dash. More than a few eyes have been on Vince Lombardi, who has been busy making a few enemies and a lot of .football players as the new head coach of the Washington Redskins. And gridiron fans from Buffalo to Los Angeles are wondering if last year's disgruntled and contract-less football stars, led by O. J. Simpson, will really form their own barnstorming team, as has been suggested by a group of promoters. With all this excitement, the sports fan has hardly had time to think about the retreat of the Detroit Tigers, last year's diamond champion, into relative oblivion. Part of the reason for the lack of concern with the Tigers' "collapse" is that it really hasn't been that much of a collapse. The Bengals haven't exactly been a complete riches to rags story this season. With a won-lost percentage hovering around .550 with a little less than half the schedule remaining, the Tigers are still respectable. But respectability is not quite what's expected of a team that coasted to the AL pennant with a margin of a dozen games over its nearest challenger and then took the Series in seven games from a tough Cardinal squad. And there are those who don't consider the spectacle of the Tigers battling to keep their noses out of-the second division, almost a dozen games behind the league leaders, a respectable sight no matter what their won-lost ratio is. Of course, one reason for the comparatively low spot of the Tigers is the increased strength of the other teams in their divi- sion. Boston, who edged Detroit out of the pennant two years ago, seems to have ironed out a lot of the problems that plagued them last year and who ever expected the Senators to be a handful of games above the breakeven point in mid-July? And then there's the Orioles, who continue winging away at an almost .700 clip while the rest of the League wonders how long they can maintain the phenomenal pace. But the major reason for the plight of the Tigers is their failure to hit. In this, the Year of the Revival of the Hitter, the once beautiful Bengals are swinging like they were still playing in the Year of the Pitcher, 1968. With a team batting mark of .2.42, Detroit ranks seventh in the American League. More to the point, the team average is fourth among the six teams in the Eastern Division. Only last place Cleveland and fifth place New York sport lower team bat- ting marks. The Orioles,in comparison, have combined for a team total of .267. None of the Tigers a:e having an exceptional year at the plate, and quite a number of key players are way off from last year's totals. Not one Detroit batter has notched a place among the top five in the batting average, home runs or runs batted in columns. Jim Northrup is the Bengal's leading hitter at .278, but he ,bats mostly against righthanders. Norm Cash, at .277, is holding his own. Most of the other Tiger regulars, however, are slumping like drunken sailors over a bar. Willie Horton, the Tiger's leading slugger last year with a .285 average and 36 homers, is down around ,250 and has only 14 round trippers to his credit. Mickey Stanley has been playing a tight centerfield, but his .231 mark, a drop of 25 points from last year, hasn't helped much. The story is about the same for Bill Freehan, the All Star catcher who lost his place behind the plate to spunky Jim Price, and superstar Al Kaline. Both are down twenty points from last year, and the Tigers are enjoying it less. The Tigers' failure to carry a big stick in the year of the hitter is also forcing manager Mayo Smith to play catch up ball in a lot of his games. With a lineup that features four or five slumping stars, the Tigers are without a potent first strike capability and often find themselves a couple of runs behind in the later innings Because of this frequent late inning deficit, the Tigers have to be more cautious. It's hard to take the risk of a hit and run or a stolen base or a green light on three and oh whe your team is two or three runs behind in the late innings and might not have another chance to catch up. The Tigers' problems at the plate are even more dishearten- ing since the Detroit moundsman are turning in some fine efforts, even without a high caliber fourth starter. Denny Mc- Lain, with 15 victories, and Mickey Lolich, who has won 14 games, are among the le'ague's leading hurlers, And Earl Wilson, although he is only 9-7 on the year, seems to get better every time he throws. Of course, weak hitting and all, nobody is counting th Tigers out of the race at this time. After all, the miracle Braves of 1914 won the pennant after being in last place as late as July 15. But it seems safe to say that there's not going to be any miracle, or any pennant, either, in Detroit this year unless Kaline, Freehan, Horton and company perk up at the plate.
