Kennedy Memorial Stadium last night. Game time today is 12:45 p.m. It was the first postponement in the history of the All-Star ser- ies although one game in 1952 in Philadelphia had been shortened to five innings because of rain and a 1961 game in Boston was wash- ed out as a 1-1 tie after nine innings. The postponement also prevent- ed President Nixon, named the game's No. 1 fan, from attending the game as he took off last night for the moon astronauts' splash- down in the Pacific tomorrow. The gates had been open for hours and the early birds of an expected crowd of 45,000 were on hand, huddling under the project- ing upper deck. Heavy rain soaked the outfield and formed puddles on the tar- paulin covering the infield while sharp lightning flashes lighted the sky ,and thunder rumbled. It was a weird setting with the fans sit- ting in the darkness brightened only by the flashes of lightning. The washout was a bitter blow for the baseball brass who had opened a gala centennial celebra- tion Monday 'night with a spectac- ular dinner honoring the all-time all-stars. - The 1969 All-Stars had been guests of President Nixon and a White House ceremony yesterday afternoon but the rain started to pour down before they had left the grounds for the ball park They already had received the word that there would be no batting or fielding practice. The rugged early customers cheered when the electric score- board in right field lit up with the message: "Good evening. Wel- come to the 40th All-Star game.", C o m m iss i o n e r Bowie Kuhn waited until 8:27 p.m., 12 min- utes after the scheduled starting time, to announce that the game had been postponed because of the unplayable condition of the field. Several thousand VIPs, includ- ing congressmen, government dig- nitaries and press personnel were stranded under a huge tent at which a pregame barbecue was staged by Washington sponsors. Three thousand were on the in- vitation list, but the number far exceeded that. As the rain poured down and lightning flashed, the tent became dangerous. Police shepherded many of the celebrants into the nearby D.C. Armory. When rain cut off the 1952 game at Philadelphia in what was then known as Shibe Park, now Connie Mack Stadium, the National League held a 3-2 edge on home runs by Jackie Robinson and Hank Bauer. After a long wait, that game finally was called off. In 1961, the second of two games played that year was called after nine innings in a heavy rain at Fenway Park in Boston. In contrast with Tuesday's ill- fated affair, the 1968 game was played in the Astrodome at Hous- ton where it never rains. CAMPUS - HOSPITALS Efficiency. Robinson, appearing at a news conference with Feller and other former greats honored the pre- vious night, said baseball "has made great strides over the years, but baseball ownership has not moved ahead with it." The statement was an obvious reference to the fact that there are no Negro managers or high- ranking club officials in the major leagues. "I think it's a tragedy in view of the contributions black athletes have made to baseball," said for- mer Brooklyn star Robinson, the first Negro to play in the big leagues. "I can understand what Jackie Robinson is saying but I think he's wrong," countered Feller, who was LABOR IN SPORT: Baseball players ask for immediate negotiations WASHINGTON (P) - Major authority to negotiate in goodj league baseball players have urged faith and conclude an agreement club owners to conduct upcoming subject to ratification of the clubs negotiations expeditiously and ef- and players. ficiently to produce a mutually "The parties should set as their satisfactory agreement. mutual goal the conclusion of an The executive board of the Ma- agreement prior to the end of the jor League Baseball Players Asso- 1969 championship season, and ciation, in a statement of policy should make every good-faith ef- adopted at a day-long meeting fort to achieve that goal," the Monday, said it will ask the own- statement said. ers to change the basic agreement The Association said the nego- negotiated two years ago. tiations, during the past two win- The statement said the first ters, "produced honorable and agreement represented significant equitable agreement, but the progress but was not practicable means employed in arriving at to modernize completely condi- that result were all too frustrat- tions, practices and player-man-| ing and devisive." agement relationships.
