Tuesday, July 22, 1969 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Five 1 NATIONALS FAVORED 11 Baseball all-stars collide For Direct Classified Ad Service. Phiomue 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 it WASHINGTON (P) - Baseball took time out from moonwatching yesterday to name Steve Carlton of St. Louis and Denny McLain of Detroit as the starting pitchers for tonight's 40th All-Star Game at Kennedy Stadium. President Nixon is expected to be among the 45,000 who will turn out for the annual midsummer test between the best of the Na- tional League and the American League. Game time is 7:15 p.m. EST with national television and radio coverage by the National Broadcasting Co. Cartlon, a left-hander, was the surprising choice by Manager Red Schoendienst of St. Louis, who had been expected to lead with his ace, Bob Gibson, in a bid for a seventh s t r ai g h t National League victory. However, Gibson has been below par due to a damaged left knee and will be reserved for emer- gency duty. When reporters asked Carlton about his thoughts on starting he said he would have preferred to have pitched Sunday's game against Pittsburgh because he hated to miss any starts in his bid for a 20-victory season. "If I had my druthers I would have pitched Sunday's game," said the 24-year-old lefty, who has a 12-5 season record. It came as no surprise when Mayo Smith of Detroit, the Ameri- can League manager, picked "my aviator" as his starter. "My avi- ator," of course, was McLain, an airplane pilot, organist, Las Vegas entertainer and 31-game winner of 1968. He is 14-5 this season. The American League, 6-to-5 underdog, has a powerful start- ing lineup that produced 179 home runs, including 37 by Reggie Jack- son of Oakland, the majors' lead- er, and 34 by big Frank Howard of Washington. The National starting eight, ex- cluding the pitcher, has only 105 homers, with Willie McCovery of San Francisco high man at 30. Smith and Schoendienst earned the managing honors by winning pennants last year. However, both are trailing this season, the Tigers by 11 games, the Cardinals by 11 games, so another meeting does not appear likely. Schoendienst indicated he will follow Carlton with high-kicking Juan Marichal of San Francisco and probably finish up with Bill Singer, Los A n g e l e s fastball pitcher. Smith is expected to use John "blue moon" Odom of Oakland, Mel Stottlemyre of the New York Yankees and Sam McDowell of Cleveland. No pitcher is permitted to work more than three innings. daily sports NIGHT EDITOR: JIM FORRESTER unless the game goes overtime. All of the other starters must play at least the first three innings. "Naturally I want to win," said Schoendienst, "and I want to score more than one run last year's final was 1-0. Both lineups are strong and I don't think the pitchers can overpower the hitters as in the past two years." Despite their World Series vic- tory last fall, the American League, which once dominated this series but now trails 21-17-1, is anxious to get back on the vic-. tory path. "We're going to make every effort to win," said Smith. The starting lineups were deter- mined by the vote of players, coaches and managers. The American League will have Boog Powell of Baltimore at first; Rod Carew of Minnesota, the league's leading hitter, at second; Rico Petrocelli of Boston at short, and Sal Bando of Oakland at third. Jackson will be in center- field flanked by Howard in left and Frank Robinson of Baltimore in right. Detroit's Bill Freehan will- catch McLain McCovey will be at first base for the Nationals, Felix Millan of Atlanta at second, Don Kessinger of Chicago at short and Ron San- to of Chicago at third. Matty Alou of Pittsburgh, top hitter in the N.L., will play centerfield, with Cleon Jones of the New York Mets in left and Hank Aaron of At- lanta, playing his 18th all-star game, in right field. The catcher will be Johnny Bench of Cincin- nati, who is expected to get back from military service in time for the game. Willie Mays, who holds all sorts of All-Star records .from 19 pre- vious games, probably will be used as a pinch-hitter due to a shoulder problem. The game will climax the cen- tennial gala production that in- cluded an all-time All-Star team and the greatest player ever at a banquet last night. Late changes in the reserve squad found Mike Andrews of Boston replacing Dave Johnson of Baltimore, who suffered a back injury. Don Mincher of Seattle. and Roy White of the New York Yankees had been added later due to the illness of Tony Oliva and an injury to Mike Hegan. f FOR RENT' UNDERGRAD GIRL looking for 1 or 2t girls with great apt. on campus for fall. NICHOLSON'S MOTORCYCLE SALES Michigan Community Blood Center 224 S Firt, A - E 404 W_ Michigan- Ynsilantl I e DAHLMANN APARTMENTS I C31 NEW YORK (M)-The Baseball Writers Association of America settled some age-old arguments yesterday with the naming of ma- jor league baseball's greatest all- time players. There were very few surprises on the squad that has been the subject of street-corner debate al- most since the sport began a cen- tury ago. Babe Ruth, the slugging right fielder who slammed a career total of 714 home runs, was named the greatest player ever. Ruth was one of three New York Yankee play- ers named to the greatest ever team. The other were first baseman Lou Gehrig, who followed Ruth in the Murderers Row line-up that led the Yankees to total domina- tion of the sport in the 1920s and 30s, and centerfielder Joe DiMag- gio, slugging star of the 40s and 50s. Joining Ruth and DiMaggio in the greatest everoutfield was Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers, who had a career batting average of .367. The infield besides Gehrig list- ed Rogers Hornsby at second base, Pie Traynor at third and Honus Wagner at shortstop. The catcher was Mickey Cochrane with Walter; Johnson picked as the right-hand- ed pitcher and Lefty Grove as the left-hander. John McGraw, who managed the New York Giants to 10 National League pennants, was named man- ager of the team. Also selected was a greatest living player team with DiMaggio, Traynor and Grove the only play- ers named to both. George Sisler and Stan Musial tied for the first base job on the greatest living squad with Charlie Gehringer at second, Joe Cronin at shortstop and Traynor at third. Ted Williams was picked in left field, DiMaggio in center and Wil- lie Mays in right. Bill Dickey was named the catcher and Grove and Bob Feller the pitchers. Casey Stengel was chosen manager of the greatest living team. Mays, whose 596 career homersj rank second only to Ruth's total, was the only player chosen who is still active. The San Francisco Giants' star will appear in his 16th All Star Game at Washing- ton Tuesday night. Now that that's settled, what do the fans have left to argue about? 736 Packard 731 Packard 316 E.
