Saturday, July 19, 1969 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Five i I Paae Five ,. sItronauts, DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN set for moon walki (Continued from Page 1) countdown and launch necessary; for Eagle to return to Columbia' for the return to earth. After an hour to eat, Armstrong and Aldrin are scheduled to take a four hour rest period. At midnight, after another meal, the pair will start preparing for their moon walk, unstowing and! .checking equipment. Both will put on life support- systems to provide oxygen and cooling'. . At 2:02.a.m. Eagle's cabin will be depressurized and 10 minutes later Armstrong will open the hatch and begin his descent to the surface. Stepping down the ladder, he will uncover a television camera which will record his actions. At 2:21 a.m. Monday, Armstrong will step on the moon, the first human being to set foot on an- other celestial body. For about five minutes, 'he will check his ability to move about in lunar gravity, 1/6 that of earth's. , ' , Then, using a pair of tongs, Armstrong will collect a con- tingency sample of lunar rock to assure the return of some surface material in case the moon walk has to be cut short. After stowing the sample, in his space suit pocket, Armstrong will report on the condition of Eagle and the terrain surrounding it. Al- drin will then climb down the lad- der to join his commander. While Armstrong sets up the television camera, 30 feet from Eagle, Aldrin will familiarize him-, self with the strange lunar en- vironment. Aldrin will then expose a foil strip to the solar wind for later analysis on earth. N'ext, Armstrong collects be- tween 30 and 40 pounds of lunar soil in a' sample box. At the same time, Aldrin takes photographs and evaluates various ways of moving around in the reduced #avityr Their moon walk half over, both astronauts will make a detailed photographic inspection of Eagle's outside. Then both will deploy two, scientific experiments. Armstrong will set up a laser re-j flector that will allow scientists to measure the distance to the moon to within 6 inches. while Aldrin de- ploys a seismometer to measure moon quakes.x During the remainder of the' moon walk, the astronauts will col- lect another thirty to 40 pounds of I Mr rock, carefully photograph- iig each sample and the, area it came from. Finally, after 2 hours, 40 min- utes on the surface, Aldrin and then 'Armstrong return to Eagle with their precious samples and film. . .. t , .: "... . , . '.,..,. .
