Page Four THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, July 18, 1969 I A WINNING STREAK? Bengals escape Senators For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 f By ERIC SIEGEL Special To The Daily WASHINGTON-It was "State of Michigan Night" last night at RFK Stadium and the Tigers responded to the presence of the home fans away from home by providing some good baseball, a lot of excitement and maybe a few mild heart attacks. And, finally, a thrilling 4-3 vic- tory over the Washington Sena- tors. The outcome of the game wasn't decided until the final pitch and none of the fans left their seats for the usual ninth inning exodus unless they were falling off the edge of them. Trailing 4-3 in the final frame, the Penators marched up to face Fred Lasher, the third Tiger pit- cher, After Hank Allen bounced out, Del Unser lashed a triple against the fence in deep left center. Lasher then ran, the count to 3-1 on Tim Cullen before issuing him a free pass to put runners at the corners. Detroit manager Mayo Smith decided he had enough and called in Don McMann who couldn't get anyone out two nights ago, to face Frank Howard. Howard already had a single and home run number 34 to his credit. But McMahon got Howard to hit the ball on the ground to shortstop Tommy Tresh. Tresh daily sports NIGHT EDITOR; JIM FORRESTER flipped to Ike Brown at second who relayed the ball to first for the double-kill. The game-ending double play helped preserve starter Earl Wil- son's eighth victory against sev- en defeats. The Tigers started helping Wil- son in the first inning when Wil- lie Horton smacked a Casey Cox offering into left field for his twelfth home run to make it 3-0 Tigers. Cox and Wilson then settled down to a pitching duel for the next four innings, until the bot- tom of the sixth when Howard hit a Wilson fast ball into the upper deck in left center to narrow the gap to 3-1. Wilson left in the seventh as Smith and Washington master- mind Ted Williams locked horns in a game of strategy. After Jim French walked, Wil- liams sent lefty Lee Maye into bat for Cox. Smith countered by replacing Wilson with a left- hander of his own-Mike Kil- kenny. Williams then sent right-hand- ed Hank Allen into bat for Maye. But Smith won the battle of wits as Allen bounced into a double- play. The Tigers added the winning tally in the eighth off reliever Dennis Higgins. Jim Northrup led off with a single to center. The Tigers then played hit and run, and once again Mayo's strategy paid off. Norm Cash poked a single to left behind shortstop Ed Brink- man, who went to cover second as Northrup broke from first. The hit allowed Northrup to steam all the way to third. H i g g i n s then wild - pitched Northrup home to give the Tigers a 4-1 margin. The Senators retaliated in their half of the eighth with a pair of runs on two singles, a walk and a two-run error by second baseman Ike Brown. That made the score 4-3, and set the stage for the dramatic ninth inning.
