Page Four THE MICHIGAN DAILY Thursday, July 17, 19 ... _ ._.. r ,.._.. ,. r , I Mets mangle Cubs, 9-5 For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 Tigers blank Na By The Associated Press CHICAGO - The New York Mets rocked Ferguson Jenkins and the Chicago Cubs for six runs in the first two innings yesterday and then hung on for a 9-5 vic- tory which lifted them within 31/2 games of the National League's East Division leaders. Tommie Agee triggered a four- run first inning rally with a lead- off double and then/helped kayo Jenkins with a leadoff homer in the second inning. The Cubs, with Ernie Banks leading off both rallies with a double and a single, scored four runs in the second and another in the third only to have Cal Koonce, the Mets third pitcher, halt them in the muggy 90 degree weather. After Agee doubled to open the game, Ken Boswell, Cleon Jones, Ed Kranepool and J.C. Martin all singled. Agee slugged his 16th homer to open the second and the Mets added still another run on, singles by Jones and Art Shamsky and an infield out. After the Cubs had closed to within one run, Al Weis hit his second homer in two games to open the fifth. Then in the eighth, Shamsky delivered a two- grun, two-out homer to put the game beyond reach2. Koonce, 4-3, picked up his sec- ond relief triumph in four games. With two on and none out in the J third, Koonce came in and put down the next three men while' the Cubs scored one run on a pair of sacrifices. He blanked the Cubs in the next four innings and Ron Taylor took over in the eighth. * * * WASHINGTON-Willie Horton drove in three unearned runs; with a two-out bases-loaded dou- ble in the eighth inning to break up a pitching duel and gave the Detroit Tigers and Mickey Lolich a 3-0 victory over Washington last night. Horton's double, coming on an 0-2 count, broke up the duel be- tween the Tigers All-Star pitcher ts, 3-0 Lolich, 13-2, and Washington's Dick Bosman, 6-4. Lolich opened the eighth with a, single to right and moved to sec- ond on a sacrifice bunt. Tom Tresh grounded to shortstop Ed' Brinkman, who bobbled the ball for an error, Lolich going to third. Jim Northrup looped a pop fly into short right field, but second baseman Tim Cullen made an over-the-head catch for the sec- ond out. Norm Cash walked to load the bases before Horton hit a soft, dying drive into short left- center field that Brant Alyea couldn't reach. Lolich scattered four singles while striking out nine, including power hitter Frank Howard three times, as he ended Washington's four-game winning streak and De- troit's three-game losing streak. He was in trouble in the first, when the Senators had runners on first and third with none out. But he fanned Howard- and Alyea and got Ken McMullen on a fly ball. And he got Paul Casanova and Del Unser with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth. (Y) - Joel Namath held a secret meetingI with his New York Jets teammates' on the Hofstra University campus last night and was quoted as tell- ing the players that the entire situation revolving around his re- tirement would be resolved by the weekend. Word of the secret meeting came through Johnny Sample, the Jets' defensive captain. Sample said he got a call from Namath at 5:50 p.m. in which Namath asked him to set up a meeting with .the Jets' veterans at the University Field House. Sam- ple said Namath met with the players for 45 or 50 minutes. Sample said Namath had been in touch with pro football Com- missioner Pete Rozelle for the past three or four days, "and they hope to have this thing resolved by Friday or Saturday." Reached later, Rozelle said: "I will acknowledge that I have had private conversations with Namath for the last couple of days. Beyond that, I really could- n't say anything more at this time." Namath announced his retire- ment on June 6 after Rozelle told him to give up his part interest in a Manhattan restaurant al- legedly frequented by gamblers or face suspension. Sample said Namath told him the gist of the conversations with Rozelle have been that Rozelle "hasn't given Namath any dence that Namath or the taurant, Bachelors III, hasi anything wrong." evi- res- done Asked why the quarterback's meeting with the players was sec- ret, Sample said: "Namath'didn't want to talk to anyone else, not the press, not Coach Weeb Ew- bank." Sample said the sentiment of the team after the meeting was that "each and every man, to a man, is behind Namath." Rozelle said earlier this week he would meet with the Jets player committee to explain his side of the Namath situation. Sample said the players still want to talk to Rozelle. "We asked him to come Monday and now it's Wednesday," Sample said. Also at the meeting was tight end Pete Lammons, who walked out of camp Tuesday in apparent sympathy for Namath. At 10:30 p.m. EDT, Namath and his attorney, James Walsh, rlet with Coach Ewbank at the Hofstra clubhouse and was offi- cially granted permission to re- main away from practice while meetings continued with Rozelle. The official Jets' statement said: "Namath officially reported to camp tonight and asked for an extension of time away from prac- tice in order to continue his meet- ings with the commissioner. The extension was granted."
