Ken- nedy Stadium, he was greeted by a chorus of cat calls from Wash- ington fans who wanted to see the Tigers' 30 game winner of 1968 in action. "Come on Mayo, give us a break," one of the throng of 18,831t yelled at the Tigers' manager.t "'Put in McLain. Let's see somec pitching." By the end of the night, Smith was anong those wishing thata McLain, who was left in Detroit for treatment of a bloodclot in his left elbow, had come to Washing- ton as the Senators manhandled Sparma and the Tigers 3-0. Joe Coleman went the route for the Nats, striking out eight and allowing just five hits--all singles. The Senators jumped on Sparma in the bottom half of the third. Catcher Jim French carried a full count into a walk and came home d aily sports Sparma then gave way to Tom Timmerman who retired the next three batters. But for the Tigers, who could do virtually nothing against the 22 year-old right hander, the dam-, age was done. UNCONTRACTED CLASSIFIED RATES FOR RENT SUMMER SUBLET The Tigers mounted their only NIGHT EDITOR' serious threat in the ninth inning. JIM FORRESTER After Jim Northrup fouled out to Ifirst baseman Epstein, catcher Jim Price walked and was replaced by , Tim Cullen, a wispy .207 hitter, pinch runner Dick Trazewski. Sparma then got center fielder Dell Unser and shortstop Ed Stroud to fly to left. But the De- troit right hander walked Frank Howard and Mike Epstein before Ken McMullen lined out to end the frame. Sparma, however, was living on borrowed time. He lost a full count battle to Bernie Allen to open the Senators' half of the fourth. CubsHands redeaMets Seaver, 140 CHICAGO (P) - Billy Wil- liams' run-scoring single in the sixth inning yesterday broke Tom )Seaver's scoreless spell and sent the first-place Chicago Cubs to a 1-0 victory over the New York Mets before 37,473 at Wrigley Field. The victory increased the Cubs' lead over the Mets to 51/2 games in (the National League East. Seaver, who hurled a one-hit shutout against Chicago in New York ,last Wednesday night, ran his streak of scoreless innings against the Cubs to 18 before they finally struck. With one out in the sixth, Don Kessinger dropped a bunt single in front ofrthe plate and took se- cond on a hit and run as Glenn Beckert bounced out. Williams, the hottest htter in the Cub line-up with 11 hits in 19 previous at bats, then drilled a single into left center to score Kessinger. Billy Hands, 11-7, who recorded Chicago's only victory in the New York series last week, got out of a couple of jams in the e a r l y innings and then was relieved by Phil Regan with two out and one on in, the ninth. With one out in the second, Wayne Garrett singled and got to second on a wild pitch but Hands retired the next two batters. Al Weis opened the third with a single, went to second on .a sacri- fice bunt by Seaver but died there as Hands retired Tommie Agee and Ken Boswell. With two out in the fourth Hands walked two but ended the inning by getting J. C. Martin to bounce out. With two out in the Met's ninth Martin singled for the sixth hit off Hands. Donn Clendenon then batted for Al Weis and, with a count of two balls and no strikes on Clendenon, Regan replaced Hands. With a 3-2 count, Clen- denon hit a line drive, but second baseman Beckert made a sensa- tional catch to end the game. Seaver, retired the first 10 men before Beckert and Williams sing- led with one out in the fourth. Then the right hander poured it on as he fanned Ron Santo and Ernie Banks. Seaver, who had won eight straight since his last defeat May 25, suffered his fourth loss against 14 victories. WELCOME STUDENTS !
