Page Six THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, July 11, 1969 . -11 -11 . ., . - -- Cubs salvage series end, For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 704-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 By PHIL HERTZ Special To The Daily FLUSHING, N.Y. -- In August, 1966, two of the New York Mets' crazy fans carried a banner say- ing, "Thank God for the Chicago Cubs." At the time the Cubs were occupying the National League's basement and the Mets had finally escaped the clutches of tenth place. By 4:30 yesterday afternoon, the Mets and their fans were not in a mood to thank anyone for the Cubs. Behind the three hit pitching of Bill Hands, the Cubs demonstrated the resiliancy of a true pennant contender as they rebounded from a five game losing streak to thrash the Mets, 6-2, before a dis- appointed throng of 49,712. The Cub win snapped a seven game Met victory skein, The outlook was anything but bright for the Cubs as the game got under way. The Mets, flying high after two straight victories over the Cubs, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when 'Tommy Agee slugged his 13th home run over the. right-center field fence. The Cubs tied the game in the fourth when Don Kessinger walked leading off and went to second on a single to left by Glenn Beckert. Bill Williams popped to short but Ron Santo connected for what' appeared to be a. three run homer; however, ,Met left fielder Cleon Jones made a leaping grab of the Cub third sacker's blast. Just as Met hurler Barry Gentry had be- gun to breathe a little easier, Ernie Bank's singled to left to score Kessinger. The Mets came right back in the bottom of the frame to re- gain the lead. Ken Boswell singled to right, moved to third on walks to Art Shamsky and Wayne Gar- rett, and scored on Ed Kranepool's grounder to first. In the fifth Chicago finally got a few breaks and was able to put the game under wraps. Jibm Qualls led off with a double. Hands then reached first after his attempted sacrifice resulted in a run-down of Qualls. Qualls was safe back at second when Al Weis dropped the throw from Garrett in the run- down. Kessinger followed the confus- ion with a line single to tie the game. Beckert beat out a bunt to fill the bases and William's sag- rifice fly to center brought home the Cubs' second run of the in- ning. The Cub's lead increased to 4-2 on the same play when Jerry Grote tried to throw ofut Beckert at second after he had taken Agee's throw from center. Grote's throw got by Boswell at second and Kessinger was able to score. Santo then put the 'icing on ast Mets 6-2 Santo. "The Mets are no fluke, and ,I'm not just joshing you. lThey're there. The Mets and the Cubs won't fall on their faces." Beckert added, "They have a fine team and I like to see them winning, but I hope they finish second." - NIGHT EDITOR: Meanwhile pennant fever con- tinued in both Chicago and New York. Zoilo Versalles started the In- dian rally by singling through the box. He then tried to steal sec- ond. Tiger catcher Bill Freehan's throw had Versalles cold but second-baseman Dick McAuliffe dropped the ball for an error. Two walks and two outs later, Horton drilled his single to left. . Detroit opened the scoring in the second on Jim Price's home run and added another run on Don Wert's RBI single. The In- dians got one back in the fifth as. Ken Harrelson walked and stole second. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sac- rifice fly. Tiger, ace Denny McLain was breezing along with a two-hitter through six innings but he was unable to retire a man in the seventh as the Indians came up with four runs, two of them on a homer ,by Ken Harrelson and one on a squeeze bunt by Indian starter Dick Ellsworth. The Tigers came right back to tie the game in their half of the seventh. Jim Price led off with a walk and scored on Mickey Stan- ley's long double to right-center. After Jim Northrup grounded to first, Norm Cash, pinch-hitting for Don Wert, unloaded a two-run homer into the lower deck in right to knot the snore. The Tigers were again plagued by erratic pitching, especially from the bullpen, and anemic hit-' ting. Don McMahon, who came on in the seventh in relief of McLain, and Timmerman were both off form while Mike Kilkenney pitch- ed 31/3 strong innings. Tiger bat- ters could muster only six hits.
