Page Two THE MICHIGAN DAILY Wednesday, July 9, 1969 NOW JUST FOUR BACK: Mets rally to nip Cubs For Direct Classified Ad Service. Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 Ad By PHIL HERTZ Special To The Daily NEW FLUSHING, N.Y. - The game was eight and one half innings old, and the Chicago Cubs were leading the New York Mets 3-1 behind the one hit pitching of Ferguson Jenkins. Above the roar of the crowd you could hear a lone Cub fan gloating, "If the Mets win this one, they're for veal." Before over 55,000 cheering Met fans, the New Yorkers continued their miraculous surge yesterday afternoon by rallying for three runs in the bottom half of the ninth to stun the Eastern-division- leading Cubs 4-3 in the opening of a three contest pennant confron- tation. For the first time in the Mets' eight-year history the eyes of the baseball world were turned to them as they participated in their first "crucial" series. The Mets, however; looked more like their legendary inept predecessors than pennant contenders until the' ininth.' Jenkins held the Mets hitless in the first four and one third in- nings before Ed Kranepool's high fly ball cleared the right field fence to give the Mets a short- lived 1-0 lead. dailly sports. NIGHT EDITOR LEE KIRK Ernie Banks' 14th homer off Jerry Koosman tied the game in the sixth. The Cubs took the lead in the seventh when Jenkins walk- ed on four straight pitches and eventually scored on a single by Glenn Beckert. Ex-Met Jim Hick- man's circuit clout in the eighth gave Chicago a 3-1 margin. The Mets then suddenly came alive against Jenkins in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Ken Boswell led off the inning with a bloop double to center. After Tommy Agee fouled out, Boswell moved to third on a long double to center by Donn Clendenon. Boswell held up when Don Young gloved the ball but Young lost the ball when he crashed into the fence. Cleon Jones then followed with another double to tie the score, Art Shamsky was walked inten- tionally and Jenkins got Wayne Garrett on a ground out, Then Kranepool, who had been booed vigorously at the start of the game, blooped a two-strike pitch to left to plate Jones with the win- ning tally, The win, the Mets' sixth straight, moved them within four games of the Cubs who have now lost four in a row. BilboardJ The Michigan Rugby Football Club will play the Sarnia, On- tario Saints in Rochester, Mich., at 3:30 p.m. this Sunday, July 13. The game will be part of Rochester's centennial celebra- tion. The 21-year-old right-hander, 5-1, gave up a first inning dou- ble by Tom Tresh, then held the Tigers hitless until Dick McAu- liffe singled with two out in the eighth. He lost his shutout bid in the ninth, when Norm Cash was hit by a pitch, took third on Jim Northrup's double and scored on a ground out. Detroit left-hander Mickey Lo- lich went into the game seeking his 10th straight victory, b u t wildness proved his undoing. He walked three men in a row in the second and Nagy lined a single to right for two runs - his first RBI in the majors. The Red Sox Jumped on Lolich, 11-2, for two more runs in the third. Carl Yastrzemski doubled and went to third as Reggie Smith stretched his hitting streak to 15 games with an infield single. Two outs later, George Scott was walked intentionally before Russ Gibson drilled a two-run single. Birds sweep Yanks BALTIMORE (R) - The Balti- more Orioles snapped a mini- slump and padded their runaway lead by sweeping a twi-n i g h t doubleheader from the New York Yankees last night, 10-3 and 4-1. A club record 10-run explosion in the fourth inning, with seven of the nine hits coming in succession with two out, won the opener for Tom Phoebus, 8-2, his first tri- umph since June 15. Mike Cuellar, 9-7, hurled a three-hitter in the' nightcap -- all by Ron Woods - after being staked to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. AMERICAN LEAGUE Eastern Division . W L Pct.
