The Soviet Union claimed one Soviet river worker was killed and three were injured in a "bandit attack" by Chinese soldiers on Gold- insky Island on the Amur River, yesterday. Peking radio claimed the alleged intrusion touched off sharp fighting. Peking demanded that Moscow "immediately stop its en- croachment upon Chinese territory and immediately stop its armed provocations." * * * ISRAELI AND SYRIAN PLANES battled over the occupied Golan Heights of Syria yesterday. Seven Syrian, MIG 21's were downed, Israeli spokesmen said. Da- mascus radio said four Israeli jets were destroyed and three Syrian. planes were lost. The Israelis admitted no losses. The battle was one of the largest dogfights in the Middle East since the six-day 1967 war. The Golan Heights were seized by Is- rael during the war and have been held ever since then. * * * PRESIDENT NIXON proposed yesterday bringing 4.8 million more workers under unemployment insurance, doubling, the em- ployer-paid tax base and forbidding states to pay jobless bene- fits to strikers. Nixon said adding 4.8 million workers to the 57 million already covered would leave about 12 million still uncovered, mostly in state and local jobs. The AFL-CIO attacked Nixon's legislative proposal to Congress for not imposing federal payment levels on the states. The bill merely would urge the states to voluntarily bring their now widely varying scale of payments up to 50 per cent of a jobless worker's normal weekly wage. The AFL-CIO said most jobless workers now get less than 30 per cent of their normalpay in unemployment insurance. BONNY THE ASTROMONK died 12 hours after his earth orbit was cut short because he seemed bored. An autopsy was ordered yesterday for the astromonk. The 14-pound monkey had completed 81/2 days of a scheduled 30-day mission to determine the effects of long-term weightlessness on a being similar to man. Before the flight, scientists said they hoped Bonny's mission would last a minimum of 14 days. Two Apollo missions lasted 10 days and a Gemini flight lasted 13 " GUYS .
