Ant the Po ice tighten ease against alleged killer (Continued from Page 1) ianson, of the State Police crime lab said yesterday. The troopers have been search- ing the riverbed upstream from the bridge since 9 a.m. yesterday but have not yet found anything. Krasny said more sophisticated search equipment, like electromag- nets, may be brought in today to aid the search. Police are not certain why Shewcraft offered the informa- tioo, but police officers said they believe he is telling the truth. Officials have theorized that Shewcraft feared being implicat- ed in the murder investigation by Bishop and decided to talk before Bishop does. Shewcraft presently is under protective custody for further questioning. Krasny said if the gun is found, it may be positively identified by the Lansing crime laboratory as the murder weapon if the score marks on the gun barrel are sim- ilar to those on the shells police have found on the scenes of the Kalom and Phillips murders. Police are not releasing the key information which led to Bis-' hop's arrest at 11 p.m. Sunday, but Krasny told reporters M is s Phillips' parents had given him a list of people she was acquainted with or working with in sociologi- cal studies. Krasny also confirmed that Bis- hop's fingerprints had been found on a coffee cup in the victim's apartment. A pack of cigarettes of a brand reportedly not smoked by Miss Phillips had also been found by police. Police further reported that Bishop's name was found in notes compiled by the slain girl for her social work. Miss' Phillips ap- parently met Bishop through University instructor T h o m a s Mayer who counseled Bishop af- ter his parole from prison. Krasny said in a news confer- ence yesterday that Bishop had not been questioned or suspected until immediately before his ar- rest. The police chief added that the investigation had been delay-. ed for an hour while fingerprints and a record were brought in from files in Lansing. Bishop was walking a few miles from home when he was appre- hended. The arresting policeman said he offered no resistance. Bishop was taken to police headquarters in City Hall and un- derwent questioning for more than three hours by Ann Arbor De- puty Chief Harold Olson and State Police Captain Walter Stev- ens. project may be further delayed because the city has not yet ob- tained all the land needed through condemnation suits. City Planning Director Martin says he does not think these prob- lems should delay the East Uni- versity closing, but the approval of the city planning commission and council is needed. Mayer says that the University would keep East University open until the Church Street work is completed. Proceeding at a somewhat quicker pace is the street im- provement plan. Phase I, rebuild- ing Forest and Huron. is com- pleted. The second phase-the re- construction of North University - from Forest to Fletcher - is scheduled to be completed Sept. 15. The third phase, widening Washtenaw between South Uni- versity and Geddes, may be begun later this year. Land is still being acquired for this project. When these improvements are finished, the only incomplete part of the perimeter road system will be the widening of Hill. Art ,degree liberalized (Continued from Page 1) of the fine arts degree with added requirements. Students must take Zoology 101 and 252 and some physiology and must have taken chemistry either in high schoola or as an undergraduate. The design school also offers a B.S. in design. However, require- ments for this degree have not been changed. Because most design students are now obliged to create their own programs to a large extent, the school is planning to set up expanded counseling facilities, says William Lewis, associate dean of the A&D school. Present plans call for student counseling by art school seniors to help students who need advice in planning their academic pro- grams.
