Continued from , Pw, ) By BILL DINNER Special To The Daly PRINCETON, N.J.- Happiness is passing Lutz. At least it was for the persistent Mike Estep as he registered the major upset of the National Col- legiate Tennis Tournament by downing USC's topseeded Bob Lutz, 5-7, 6-4, 8-6. Despite Lutz's defeat, USC clinched its third straight NCAA tennis title by placing four of its representatives in the semi-finals. and rolling up 30 points, seven ahead of second place UCLA. Michigan was forced to settle for a fifteenth place tie with eight points after Pete Fishbach a n d Brian Marcus were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the doubles. Yanks triumph On Iger error By The Associated Press NEW YORK-Pitcher Earl Wil- son's throwing error on Jerry Kenney's high bouncer in the sec- ond inning allowed three runs to score and enabled the New York Yankees to beat Detroit 5-3 last night. Wilson's low throw' skipped past first baseman Norm Cash, and Gene Michael, Jake Gibbs and Horace Clarke raced home as the Yankees broke a 1-1 tie with two out. Michael and Gibbs had singled with two out. Wilson, 6-6, saw a string of 17 scorelss innings ended in the first when the Yanks scored on a single by Clarke, Kenney's double and Joe Pepitone's sacrifice fly. That matched a Detroit run off Stan Bahnson, 4-9 in the.top of the inning on singles by Dick McAuliffe and Ike Brown and Al Kaline's sacrifice fly. Detroit got another run in the fifth on Brown's infield single and Kaline's RBI double. But the Yankees made it 5-2 in their half when Bobby Murcer led off with a triple and scbred on' Jimmie Hall's sacrifice fly. * * * Orioles fly aain WASHINGTON-Un b e a t e n Dave McNally hurled a two-hitter for his 10th victory of the season as the Baltimore Orioles scored in the eighth and niiith innings and beat' Washington 2-0 last night; for their seventh straight triumph. Tim Cullen's leadoff single to" left in the third and a single to center by Paul Casanova to open1 the ninth were the only safeties off the Oriole left-hander. The only other Senator to reach base1 was Frank Howard, who walked with one out in the seventh. Estep, who played most of the season in the shadow of teammate Zan Querry, was never sure of himself; in fact, Estep exclaimed, "Confidence? Are you kidding? Hell, I didn't feel confident after I won." Both players held service during the first set until Lutz in t h e eleventh game scored two aces to take the set. Lutz grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second, but the 19- year-old Junior Davis Cup t e a m member reeled off five quick games and held on to win the match. . The Rice sophomore, who was hitting "the best lobs of my life," waded through three match points in the last set before sealing the victory with a service ace over the discouraged Lutz. Advancing into today's semi- finals with Estep were two of Lutz' teammates, Joquin Layo-Mayo and Marcello Lara, both Mexican Davis Cuppers. Lara defeated Miami's Luis Garcia, 3-6, 6-2, 9-7, who yester- day upset third seeded Roy Barth. Layo-Mayo whipped one of last year's semi-finalists, Arizona's Brian Chaney in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. f FOR RENT FEMALE ROOMMATE for sublet needed immediately. HIL HERTZ Michigan's last hopes for a title faded as the doubles combo of Marcus and Fishbach lost a trying match to seventh seeded Bob McKinley and Richard Stock- ton of Trinity University (Texas), 4-6, 6-2, 4-6. After switching services in the opening set, both teams held un- til the tenth game when McKin- ley smashed three backhand vol- leys to break Fishbach's service and steal the set. The Wolverines came back strong in the second as they broke service twice and held on to win. The third set was an exact dupli- cate of the first except that it was Marcus' serve that was' broken in the tenth game.. Fishbach's little brother aptly summed up their performance' when he noted, "I've never seen Pete throw his racket so much." Estep's upset, however, was not the only one of the, day as Trin- ity's unknown Dan O'Bryant and Pancho Walthall turned the trick by smothering UCLA's top-seeded Roy Barth and Steve Tidhall, 6-3,1 6-1, 6-1.
