"I'm really excited about go- ing to work for Canham and Michigan," he stated. "I admire Don Canham a great deal. I've al- ways admired that type of per- son." Regarding his specific duties, Zimmer said "Canham felt that another man was needed in the department, somebody familiar 'with the specific needs of radio and television. Its a new post, with the specific needs of radio department, somebody familiar and it will be mostly what I make' of it." TAPE COVERAGE "I have some definite ideas about what we might do to aid the electronic media coverage of Michigan athletics," he continued. "I'd like to install a tape system and have , a special telephone number that radio stations can call. They could hear a taped in- terview with a coach or player, or a description of whats going on on the athletic scene. Other schools like Michigan State and Notre Dame have a similar set-up and I think it's a good idea." 'Id also like to prepare weekly films and send them to television stations," he said. Zimmer will continue his daily sports show on WAAM and also continue broadcasting Michigan athletic events. "I should have enough time for: both," he said. WOLVERINES; However, proving that statistics often are misleading, first-place Michigan 5-1 is tops in only one department, team fielding with a .974 mark. Wisconsin, tied for second with Minnesota in the standings at 6-2, leads in team slugging with .468. Best hitting team is Illinois, dead- locked with Michigan State for fourth place at 4-2. The Illini are batting .330, followed by Wis- consin with .326. .. Although Setzer shares Badger catching with Jim Trebbin, he has banged 11 hits in 13 trips for his .602 league mark. For the overall season, Trebbin is hitting .308, compared with Setzer's .550 for 19 fewer trips. FREEHAN'S RECORD The Big Ten season batting record is .585, set in 1961 by Mich- igan's Bill Freehan, now a catch- ing star for the Detroit Tigers. CCarey/ and Nickels each pitched a pair of seven-inning shutouts and each has yielded only five hits. However, Gopher Carey has walked one fewer than Nickels, 10, and has struck out two more, 16. Other leading hitters are Augie Matejzel, Illinois infielder, and Illini catcher Ken Rizzo, each with .500; outfielder Doug Nel- son of Michigan, .474; Harry Ken- drick, Michigan State catcher, .455, and outfielder Elliott Mad- dox of Michigan .450.
