NEW YORK ()-Golf's tourna-
ment pros, including the stars
seen almost weekly on television,
broke with the parent Professional
Golfers Association yesterday and
prepared-starting next year-to
run their own tour.
The players, meanwhile, prom-
ised to honor existing contracts,
including some runnning into
1969. They tee off tomorrow in
the $250,000 Westchester Classic'
at Rye, N.Y., the world's richest
tournament.

The PGA accused the players
of spurning an eight-point plan
that gave them numerous conces-
sions. The players, througli at-
torney Sam Gates of New York,
accused the PGA officials of
showing bad faith and exhibiting
dilatory tactics.
"The PGA representatives broke
their word to. their own lawyer,"
said Gates, who presided at a
hastily-called press conference in
the offices of Nat- Fields, a public
relations counselor.
