Reply Big Ten to give ruling. on alleged MSU violations i I i E e{ i TDelay action on Michigan case until December The Big Ten will release Sun- day a report of its investigation of alleged athletic violations at Michigan State. John Dewey, con- ference examiner, said yesterday the report would include a ruling made by Big Ten athletic directors in their meeting, last week. , Dewey hinted the penalties would "not amount to mtjch." Action on alleged violations at Michigan was postponed till the Big Ten's regularly scheduled business meeting in December. , The report on Michigan State comes six months after a Daily story revealed possible athletic violations at the school. Movie tickets, telephone calls, and meal tickets were said to have been given to MSU athletes in apparent violation of conference rules. The Daily also printed a story exposing discounts given to Mich- igan athletes by local merchants on such items as movie ticl;ets, clothes, and meals. Dewey then began his investiga- tion at the two schools, intervieW- ing athletes, coaches, and local merchants in Ann Arbor and Est Lansing. Officials at Michigan State in- cluding Athletic Director Clarene (Biggie) Munn, Football Coach Duffy Daugherty, and Big Tei Faculty Representative John Fu- zak have publicly denied the 4c- cusations. Daugherty threatened to bring a libel suit against the Daily' bit did not do so. Major League Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE By The Associated Press Pro football explodes with a 13-game exhibi- tion schedule this weekend, featured by a na- ttionally televised battle between the Detroit; Lions and Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League Sunday afternoon in Philadel- phia. The game originally had been set for Mexico City but suddenly was canceled. No official ex- planation was given but the shift was attributed to recent student riots in the Mexican Capital. So the contest was moved to Philadelphia's 1 Franklin Field. It will be televised by CBS, start- ing at 3 p.m., EDT, holding to the time originally set for Mexico City. Seven games are scheduled tonight, twoaof them interleague, a single AFL and two NFL battles to- morrow and a final game Monday night in Hous- ton's Astrodome between the AFL New York Jets and Houston Astros. The two interleague games send the AFL Boston Patriots against the NFL New Orleans Saints at Tulane Stadium and the AFL Kansas City Chiefs against the NFL Minnesota Vikings at Bloomington's Met Stadium. Both are night games, with 8 p.m. local starting times. The Patriots will send their quarterback Ben Trull, against the Saints' Billy Kilmer, who ' threw the touchdowns for New Orleans in the l game against Los Angeles. The Patriots have an-: other new quarterback in Mike Taliaferro, for- merly of the Jets. The Vikings also have a new starting quar- terback, Gary Cuosso, and he may have to put I on a show to offset the power of a Kansas Cityc team that rolled up 426 yards in an opening exhi- bition victory against Cincinnati. Night Editor: Joel Block Larry Csenka, the sensational hard-running fullback from Syracuse University, will make his debut for the Miami Dolphins against Buffalo Sunday afternoon at Rochester, N.Y. Other games Saturday are Atlanta vs. Wash- ington at Tampa, Fla.; Baltimore vs. Chicago at Birmingham, New York Giants vs. champion Green Bay at Green Bay, all in the NFL; Cincin= nati vs. Denver at Denver and San Diego vs. Oak- land at Oakland in the AFL. Besides the Lions-Eagles televised feature and the Miami-Buffalo game Sunday, the Sabbath Ia afternoon card offers a game between Dallas and San Francisco of the NFL at San Francisco. San Francisco fans will get another good look at quarterback Steve Spurrier, former Heisman Trophy winner from Florida, who will play at least a half, opposing the Cowboys' Don Meredith and Craig Mortion. Joe Namath, the Jets' 4,000-yard-a-season passer, will give his fragile legs a test against the AFL Eastern Division champs Monday night in a game expected to fill the Astrodome. Namath un- derwent an operation over the winter and the strength of his knees are said to be an unknown quantity. BILL CAMPBELL gives a meek smile as he unpacks his bags after shooting a blistering 67 yesterday to take a second-round lead in the American Golf Classic. The former U.S. Amateur Champion did not expect to survive the cut and packed his bags for a quick getaway. U15 .Amateur Campbell takes lead in American Classic AKRON, Ohio (AP)-Former U.S. Amateur champion Bill Camp- bell stole the show from the Pros yesterday, carving out a solid three- under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead after 36 holes in the $125,000 American Golf Classic. The seemingly ageless insurance man from Huntington, W. Va., who never played the tough Firestone Country Club course until Thursday, toured the 7,180-yard layout with four birdies and only one bogey. His 137 at the halfway mark was three under par. Right on his heels with 138 were Canadian George Knudson and Lee Elder of Washington, who is playing his first season on the pro tour. Knudson added a 68 to his opening 70 while Elder shot an even par 70 after Thursday's 68. TUNE-UP The 45-year-old Campbell, who said he came here to tune up for the National Amateur later this month in Columbus, Ohio, bir- died Nos. 2, 5, 7 and 16 and bogeyed only No. 8. Campbell, who captured the National Amateur in 1964, the last time the tournament was a match-play affair, one-putted 11 holes and needed only 25 putts. He sank a 40-footer on No. 7 and a 20 footer on No. 16 for birds. He won the Canadian Open in 1956. First-round leader John Schlee of Dallas, who equalled the course record Thursday with a sizzling 65, skied to a 75 with a round that included five bogeys. Schlee was, in a 140, tied with Rod Runseth, :Art Wall, Jr., England's Tony Jacklin, Harold Henning of South Africa and de- fending champion Arnold Palmer, who rollgd in a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to salvage his second straight 70. Only two strokes back of the leader at 139 were Howie Johnson, who also carded a 67; Johnny Pott; Bob Lunn, who stumbled on Nos. 15 and 16 with bogeys; and Jack Nicklaus, who posted a 69 on the strength of three birds and two bogeys.
