Michigan Lions' Eddy ready for new start DETROIT -P-Nick Eddy, his injured knee "stronger than ever,"' is eager to start the 1968 National Football League season.- The 23-year-old Detroit Lions halfback sat out his rookie year after suffering a knee injury in an exhibition game. It was a se- vere blow to Coach Joe Schmidt who had planned to use the slick, ex-Notre Dame halfback in tan- dem with Mel Farr. Farr went on to gain more than, 860 yards rushing and was named the NFL's offensive Rookie-of-the -Year by The Associated Press. "I think Joe wants to use Mel; and me in the same backfield,"l said Eddy. "I feel strong this year9 and maybe I'll be able to take' some of the running load off Mel's back." Eddy said he works out daily with weights to maintain the .strength in his injured knee. "The knee is stronger than ever now," he said. "I think part of the reason I was hurt last .year was because I played in the College All-Star gamhe and was never able to get into top condition by the time I reported to the Lions. My weight is about the same and I'm in good shape going into training camp this year." The 6-foot, 206-pound runner scored a touchdown the first time he carried the ball for the Lions in an exhibition game last year. The Lions were counting on him / ~.... .
