It was Detroit's eighth straight failure to break into the win column and solidified the Cougars' position in the ATTACKS COLOR BARRIER: Black golfer vows to cr E .0 10 e,,V41 rnk"wAb dnk SAN ANTONIO, Tex. (A')- "I'm gonna play in the Masters before I die," Charlie Sifford vowed yes- terday, chomping hard on a black cigar. "I imay just get the ticket here this week." The elegant and exclusive Masters in the magnolia groves of the deep South represents the final challenge to this 45-year-old former Charlotte, N.C., caddie, who has been batting his black head against the white man's preju- dices and superiority on the golf tour for more than 20 years. "Most of the barriers are dis- appearing but there are still a couple of tournaments where I still have trouble," the black vet- eran said. "You know what they are---I don't need to name them." Sifford left no doubt that one of them was the Masters, where no black man has ever played. The loss was especially painful for the Detroit club, which had taken the early lead on Walter Bruce's goal at the 24-minute mark of the first half. Then, with five minutes remain- ing in the period, Milosevic sneaked a short kick behind Cou- gar goalie Manfred Kammerer which nudged the goal post and dribbled into the corner of the net. ' The goal, considered "cheap". by most fans, took a lot of the fight out of the Detroit club, and the ensuing letdown allowed Milo- sevic to tally again just two min- utes later. The Cougars opened sharply in the second period, but failed to score as Conde repeatedly stopped, short-range shots which appeared headed for the net. After the Clipper netminder trapped Bill Cassidy's bullet at the ten-minute mark the Detroit shots began to wander, and it uas not until the closing min- utes of action that the Cougars again mounted a cohesive offense. Milosevic's final goal came af- ter 24 minutes had elapsed In the half. The star forward took a short pass from Ademar Saccone and drilled it past Kammerer for the decisive score. The Cougars got the game's final tally with twelve minutes remaining, when Willie Hunter recovered an errant shot by Cas- sidy and got it by Conde. The Detroit defense, led by right halfback Dirk Stucken, con- trolled the rest of the game. If he should win, it would be almost impossible for the Masters Green Coats to ignore him., "I could also qualify by finish- ing in the top 15 in the Open," Sifford said. "Are you sure the Masters would invite you?" someone asked. "They'd better," Sifford snapped. "If they didn't, I'd be a rich man. I'd sue both them and the PGA for all they're worth." Sifford said he had not yet been approached by any of the black activist or power groups pressing for boycotts among black athletes of various sports. "I go a different route-I don't subscribe to all that stuff," he said. "I'm not mad at anybody. But if they come to me and show they can help me, I'll listen." Sifford was the first black to crack the PGA tour on a regular basis. For years, however, he was barred in many southern cities and could play only part of the circuit. While other golfers were sup- ported by manufacturers, who provided equipment and even funds; Charlie went for years without a sponsor. He had to pay all his freight. He won several non-tour events, such as the Puerto Rican Open, the Long Beach, Almaden and Garden Opens. He was Negro na- tional champion five times. Iwt- - - -- - lsn iviuaers Last year he won his first tour { title - the Hartford Open- and the people there said he cried. Sif- ford must still feel like shedding a bitter tear now and then. Before coming here for the PGA he made a reservation in one of the contestants' hotels and got notice that he was confirmed at $12 a night. When Charlie checked into the hotel, one of San Antonio's better hostelries, the clerk informed him brusquely: "Twenty-six dollars a night." "I said to hell with it. I went to another place," Sifford said. ATTENTION FRESHMEN Reserve your textbooks NOW Pick them up when you return for fail classes.. NO CASH REQUIRED-all advance orders guaranteed.
