Thursday, July 11, 1,968 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Five tr~ .. i For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 12-2:30 I Larry Coryell, Gary Burton, Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes More of the same (Continued from Page 4) Woody Herman, who is now sporting a Nehru suit and leading an extremely young band, came .out playing a couple of bars of his theme song, the "Woodchop- per's Ball," and then served as the evenings major musical time ma- chine for the trip to the ball- rooms of the 30's and 40's. The numbers were straight from the charts of the big band era. And there were more "super guests" from the past - people given up for dead by many in the audience who had listened to them In their teens. Jack Leonard came out singing Tom Dorsey's ar- rangement of "Marie"; Erskine Hawkins did "Tuxedo Junction" and "Tip it In." And Herman's band did Glenn Miller's "In the Mood," Benny Goodmans "Don't be that way," Artie Shaw's "Sum- mit Ridge Drive" and Bob Eberly came out to sing "Green Eyes" and "Tangerine." Those who grew up after the Era got a chance to dip into the days of their par- ent's youth. By current standards it was pretty hokey stuff, but it was all right. Duke Ellington, a band leader *for over 40 years, still has the same magic. And many of the members of his band are also great names who have been around for a while: "Cat" Anderson and Coo- tie Williams on trumpet; Harry Carney on Baritone sax and bass clarinet; Johnny Hodges on alto sax; Paul Gonsalves and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis on tenor sax and Rufus "Speedy" Jones on drums. The Duke had some fans jitter- bugging in the aisles with "Take the A Train" and drew sights of nostalgic pleasure with "Satin M The new Dizzy Gillespie Or- chestra, featuring Dizzy in African robes and many new faces in the band, closed the show. Dizzy is good whether he's in front of his quintet or a big band. Saturday afternoon opened with Montego Joe, who plays the conga .drums with a Calypso beat to African, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Haitian music. He received polite applausefrom angaudience which had heard Mongo Santa- maria do the same things better the previous day. Duke Ellington's quintet with1 1%Johnny Hodges, Benny Carter, Rufus Jones and Jeff Castleman played a few of the numbers heard Friday night and sounded almost the same without the big band behind them. The Duke gave his usual impeccable performance. The big surprises of the after- noon were the performances of Sonny Criss and Tal Farlow. Tal Farlow played remarkable guitar in front of a quartet. This was his first appearance at New- port, and a break from his self- imposed semi-retirement in New Jersey. His playing is unique and fresh and his agility is astonish- ing. He received a well-deserved standing ovation. Sonny Criss, on alto sax, was beautiful. He plays cool clear notes and highlighted a remarkable performance with "Willow Weep for Me." He is an authoritative player who likes melodies and plays them with conviction. Criss had been playing in France for three years but has been on the West Coast recording for the past year. TOMORROW: More from Newport, with Hugh Masekela, Dionne Warwick and others.
