P18 I i r x t i G 3 t t LOS ANGELES OP)-Barring the unforeseen, pitcher Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals, aiming at the major league record of six straight shutouts, will try to get it in Dodger Stadium Monday night against the man who holds the record, Don Drysdale.I Arthur E. "Red Patterson, Dodger vice pres- ident, confirmed the date and the match-up Thursday after conferring by telephone with Bob Harlan, the Cardinals' publicity director. "It's set," said Patterson, adding that Man- ager Walter Alston, speaking from San Fran- cisco, agreed on the date which gives both Drysdale and Gibson an extra day of rest. Both National League hurlers had tough games Wednesday. Gibson blanked the Pitts- burgh Pirates on four hits, 3-0, in St. Louis. Drysdale, pitching a no-hitter for 22/3 innings, defeated the San Francisco Giants, 2-1. Drysdale is now 10-4 for the season, Gibson, 9-5. Drysdale broke the five-game shutout record set in 1904 by Doc Harris of the Chicago White Sox, and Gibson equalled it Wednesday. Drysdale's record was set at Dodger Stadium June 5 against Pittsburgh, 5-0. The string gave Big D 54 straight scoreless innings. Gibson is now in sight of Drysdale's big league record of 582/3 scoreless innings. On June 8 against Philadelphia Don went past Walter Johnson's mark of 56. The streak ended with two out in the fifth at Dodger Stadium when Howie Bedell, a pinch hitter, drove in Tony Taylor with a sacrifice fly. Gibson now has pitched either 47 or 48 straight scoreless innings. The Cardinals claim it is 48, Commissioner William Eckert says it is 47. The disagreement goes back to the start of Gibby's streak. In the first inning Gibson gave up a home run. He then retired the next three batters. St. Louis argues Gibson should be given credit for those three outs or one more inning, since Drysdale's string extended into two-thirds of an inning. Baseball's records committee will be the final Judge on the matter, according to Patt'erson. BM GIUSON- Charter Realty 1335 S. University C23 FALL RENTALS, efficiencies, 2 bedroom units. Secrecy DETROIT (P) - Representa- tives of owners and players of the National Football League met under a shroud of secrecy at a country club near Detroit yes- terday in efforts to settle player complaints and head off a possible strike. John Gordy, of the Detroit Lions, head of the NFL Players Association, was closeted with top brass of league clubs at. the Pine Lake Country Club just out- side Keego Harbor, Mich. "I thought this was supposed to be a well-kept secret," Vince Lombardi, general manager of the Green Bay Packers, said in amazement when a newsman ar- rived at the club. Lombardi and Gordy said nei- ther would make any comment on the negotiations but Gordy -said he might issue a statement after meeting with the owners' representatives this morning. At the rootrofthe dispute was the players' request for a mini- mum salary similiar to those in baseball's major leagues. Play- ers, who now get a $10-a-day al- lowance for training, including days on which they play exhibi- tion games, reportedly are asking $500 a man for exhibition games. A source close to Gordy said earlier yesterday that the Lions' guard did not want to disclose the location of the meetings be- cause he felt negotiations would proceed more smoothly without publicity. The source said Gordy told him he was optimistic that the players could iron out their diffi- culties with the owners and that the players appeared to be in a more conciliatory mood than the owners. The Associated Press learned Thursday night that all 640 NFL players had been contacted via telephone and that a vast ma- jority of them had voted to au- thorize a strike. In Denver, Pete Rozelle, com- missioner of professional foot- ball, played down the possibility of a strike. "In the final analysis," Ro- zelle said, "both the owners and the players are responsible peo- ple who will get together." Rozelle said he had not "be- come involved in negotiations to this point. In a letter answering charges of the black student organiza- tion, the faculty-student council said it will consent to just two of the athletes' eight demands. The athletes have threatened to boycott sports at the Big Eight school unless all their de- mands are met by Aug. 1 "The council wants to make clear its desire that all black athletes remain at Iowa State and continue their education," the statement said. "We will zeal- ously guard their rights and make every effort to insure their suc- cess both as students and as ath- letes." The council said it found no basis for most of the Negroes' grievances, But the council did agree to two demands-that the Negro athletes be referred to as blacks or Afro-Americans and that a Negro counselor be hired to work with black students. The council rejected a demand' that a Negro coach be hired in each major sport at Iowa State. dail sports NIGHT EDITOR: PHIL BROWN contacted about the issues, but I have no contact on the matter," William Clay Ford, owner of the Lions, said reports of a strike were "strictly a rumor," "There is nothing to substanti- ate it," Ford said, adding that he had spoken with Gordy Thurs- day night and the player had not' mentioned the . possibility of a strike. "I know for a fact the players have not been polled," Ford said. One Lions' player, who asked that hit name not be used, said the players had been polled. Ford said yesterday's meeting was a regularly scheduled gath- ering between the players' asso- ciation and the owners' negotia- ting committee. The committee appointed by the NFL owners to negotiate with the players consists of Lombardi. The group, commissioners of the 11 major college athletic confer- ences, wound up a four-day meet- ing and issued a statement saying it made the recommendation to the National Collegiate Athletic Association by divided vote. Bill Reed, Big Ten commission- er and outgoing president of the SHORTS: group, said conferences vary in their awarding of scholarships, some dgiving them for four years and some for one. "This is a delicate issue," he said. "Scholarships shouldn't be taken away because an athlete doesn't produce up to expecta- tions." But, he said, the commissioners agreed on the need for "a device for maintaining the interest and cooperation of the athlete." It recommended the number of colleges any high school athlete. ABA Pipers plan. move, Archer leads at Cleveland Chcg.Bas .ET ROZL Directors propose scholarship limits; see battle over frosh cOmpetitiOn surrounds NFL talks could visit be limited as well as the number of contracts he could have with colleges while his sport is in season. The Association also announced it was divided on the recent NCAA ruling that freshmen be allowed to compete in all varsity sports except football and basketball, Four conferences will move to re- peal the rule at the next NCAA convention. Asked if there was any onnec- tion between the recommendation and the growing revolt of Negro athletes on campuses, Reed said the question had come up but he noted there had been moves to limit scholarships in the past. "This isr not a subject on which you can generalize," Reed said of the revolt. "But it is without question one of the most impor- tant matters in athletic adminis- tration." In other action, the association announced that beginning with the 1969 football season "absolute uniformity in the mechanics of officiating" would be enforced by the various conferences. The group also urged the NCAA to coordinate with the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations as a means for reducing the recruiting pres- sure by colleges on high school athletes. d FALL APTS.
