FALL 1968 NEW, FURNISHED, AIR COND., CLOSE IN STUDENT APARTMENTS DAH LMANN APARTMENTS DELEGATES TO A ;4-H CONVENTION also being held last week in the MSUJ Union browsed through the literature available from SDS and engaged in lively discussions with SDS members. Thepoi tical chaos ofSD kXntinued from Page 4) ventiun which was also held at MSU last weep The people from 4-H have a tendency topay more attention to the swearing and the hair than to the arguments. SDS then, is simply an amal- gamation of radically-oriented local organizations, associated really only through their similar sympathies and some national i:- sues of common concern such as the War, the draft, and the op- pressive atmosphere on the college campuses where many of 'the chapters are located. Their gen- eral radical orientation, and not a well-defined set of goals or an organizational discipline. is what Attempts by some in the past to provide SDS with more defini- tion and discipline have failed and were always doomed to failure. keeps the groups together, what makes up the basis for the organ- ization of SDS. Attempts by some in the past to provide SDS v. ith more definition and discipline have failed and were always doomed to failure by the very na- ture of the group. Some SDS members, on the other hand, maintain the group could profit from the development of a general, overall philosophy -, one which would enable them not only to more effectively commun- * icate with others, (such is the thousands of students working for Eugene McCarthy), but to "pro- tect the organization" from men- bers of other groups who come in with full-blown ideologies and disrupt political discussion. While there is some merit to this argument, the danger in its acceptance lies in the potential hardening of whatever philosophy SDS develops into a "line." This would completely change the na- ture of the present organization, destroying the freedom of inquiry the group presently enjoys. Photographed by Thomas ft.
