(')-- Im- perturbable Bert Yancey set a record-equalling pace through the first two rounds of the U.S. Open Golf Championship yesterday. And even defending champion Jack Nicklaus had to admit there may be no catching him. "In the first two days, players play for position-that is position to be able to win in the last two rounds," Nicklaus said. "But if Yancey keeps going this way, nobody will get in position." Yancey tacked a two-underpay 68 onto his first round 67 over the sun-warmed Oakhill course yes- terday for a 36-hole score of 135, matching the record set by Mike Souchak at Cherry Hills in Denver in 1960. Nicklaus set the all-time Open record of 275 at Baltusro last year, meaning that the 29-year-old Yancey can play the last two round four strokes worse than his first two and still crack the record. He can shoot a pair of 76 sand tie it. "That doesn't mean he will." Yancey has a two-stroke lead going into Saturday's round over Lee Trevino, the former $30-a- week assistant pro at El Paso, Tex., who shot a 68 for 137. Four player4 were tied at 140- t.ustralian Bruce ' Devlin, Jerry Coody and a pair of home pros, Jerry Pittman of Locust Valley, N.Y., and Don Bies of Seattle, Wash. Nicklaus was in a traffic jam at' 142, which also included New Zea- lander Bob Charles,-two-time win- ner Julius Boros, Gay Brewer and Davey Marr. Bill Casper and Gary Player, both made powerful rallies and were issuing sounds that might frighten a man of lesser courage than the ex-West Pointer Yancey. Casper, the year's leading money winner and prime favorite, showed no effects from a back injury suf- fered Thursday and shot at 68 for 143. Player, the Tittle South African who wont this event in 1965, three-putted three of the first five greens but rallied for a 69 for 145. John Schroedjer, captain of Michigan's golf team, failed to survive the second round cut. He plunged from a 74 Thursday tot 81 yesterday for a total of 155. The cut-off point was 148. MORNING VIEW: t-Associated Press ARNOLD PALMER, head bowed somberly, walks back to the clubhouse following his second round 74 in the U,S. Open. DARKROOM SUPPLIES LUMINOUS PAPER Ducks face' dry prairies By The Associated Press WINNIPEG, Manitoba-Ducks Unlimited of Canada says waterfowl breeding conditions in the Western Canada parklands vary from marginal to good but "an unsatisfactory and hazawd- ous situation exists on the prairies." The conservation oiganization, in its second survey of the season released yesterday, paints a generally gloomy picture of prospects for the fall hunting season. As a result of poor prairie conditions, "the waterfowl breeding population using the smaller prairie wetlands has been much reduced and there is evidence of a substantial shift to the larger marshes and lakes, the north, and far northern habitat." The survey says some grassland, particularly in Southern Alberta, is almost completely dry except for man-made impound- ments and will play no further part in waterfowl production regardless of rain. INNSBRUCK, Austria--The International Skiing Federa- tion cleared French Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy yes- terday of charges of commercialism and violation oft amateur rules. The Frenchman thus can keep all Alpine medals he won in the 1968 Winter Games at Grenoble. FIS President Marc Hodler of Switzerland told newsmen after the opening sessioh of a three-day board meeting that testimonies and documentation "clearly showed Killy acted in innocence" when'he posed for magazine photographs for which he was said to have received payment.
