The Tigers, although 11- lustrating a surprising tenacity to remain near-the top of the stand, ings for the major part of the sea- son, have failed' to gain enough momentum by the end of August to carry them through their in- evitable "September Slump." 1968, however, appears to be another year entirely. The Tigers have led the league from the be- ginning of the season and by Sunday had climbed to a 42 game lead over their nearest contender, the Cleveland Indians. JOURNEY Sunday, when the Cleveland Indians visited Detroit for the last game of a three-game series, I had occasion to journey out to' Tiger Stadium to see the contest. A standing-room-only crowd ; of well over 52,000 and a heat wave that reached a peak of 101 degrees combined with 37,000 wildly jub- ilant kids that flocked to the sta- dium for "Free Bat Day" made watching the game almost un- bearable.' The, loyalty of the kids to the Tigers was so intensely evident that it made more reasonable adtilts give second thought to their NIGHT EDITOR: FRED LABOUR hold possessions from K-Mart or, Gem or Shopper's Fair. Suburb people will journey to ball parks to see St. George and the dragon, if only to appease their own minor leaguers. The3 kids get a third dimension at ball parks that is not available to the tube: namely the prospect of see- ing how high a baseball is really hit or the prospect of seeing how greasy Ray Oyler really .is. But the ball park is rarely at- tended by the,'sport' fan. They realize the tremendous difficulties- inherent in that process: endless traffic jams, Ann Arbor prices,!a' view of the game always obstruct- ed by some vender, unbearable heat, and the depressing sight of ghetto life. It is so much simpler for them to open their can of Schlitz, turn on the tube, wait through four To induce thekids, they will have spectacular Free Bat Days, Free Ball Days, Free Glove Days, and Free Base Days. The grown-ups will be dragged by the prospect of air-conditioning, a luxury that their 98 to 5 jobs will not yet afford. And the ball park will become part of ;the AMERICAN HERI- TAGE. It will join the clipper ship, the town meeting,.the Maine, Plymouth Rock; and "apple pie. With the onslaught of the new technological 1 u x u r y: namely three-dimensional TV, ball parks will only be useful to tourists. ~BiI -board There will be an Earl Riskey Retirement Coffee Hour held this afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m in the lobby of the In- tramural Sports Bui lding, The event 'will be sponsored by the Department of Physical Educa- tion and Athletics. 4 -Associated Press IS BASEBALL destined to wind up next to the celery in American hearts?
