Halas, 73, last of the National Football League's founding fath- ers, retired yesterday as head football coach of the Chicago Bears - apparently for keeps. Halas, who organized the Bears as the Decatur, Ill., Staleys in 1920, said at a surprising news conference that his successor, presumably top assistant, 38-year- old Jim Dooley, will be named to- day.. Dooley, earlier this year named head offensive coach, retired asaB e d 1 6 n s e a Bear end in 1982 and has been regarded Halas' chief aide since George Allen left the Bears two years ago to become head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. State Representative Raymond J. Smit (R-Ann Arbor) yesterday presented a Michigan House\of Representatives Concurrent Resolution (HCR 281) of tribute to retiring Michigan Athletic Di- rector, Fritz Crisler. The resolution congratulates Crisler "on a lifetime devoted to excellence and sportsmanship." "I can think of no one more deserving of trib- ute than H. O. "Fritz" Crisler," Smit said. "He has been an inspiration for youth, and a super salesman of this outstanding University for 27 years as Athletic Director. As a Michigan alumni, I am extremely pleased to be able to bestow this tribute from the Legislature on a great man." The text of the resolution follows: A concurrent resolution in tribute to H. O. "Fritz" Crisler, U of M's Mr. Football and Mr. Sports will retire this year from his position as Athletic Director and his presence will be sorely missed; and WHEREAS, "Fritz" Crisler, since his letterman days in three sports at the University of Chicago (Football, Basketball and Baseball) has 'sought and attained an enviable high level of excellence in sports having served as head football, coach at The University of Michigan for ten years and as Athletic Director at that same University for the past 27 years compiling an enviable record. At The University of Michigan his teams over the 10 years' span of his coaching won 71 games, lost 16, and tied 3, which is an all-time Big Ten 'record for that span of years; and, WHEREAS, "Fritz" Crisler has never had a STROBE LIGHTS-761-0195 FI PARTICIPATE in the Poor People's March in Washington over Memorial Day weekend. GD However, the fabled coach who brought pro football out of the backwoods in 1925 by hiring Il- linois' famous Galloping Ghost, Red Grange, off the Illini cam- pus, conceded: "Looking at the practical reali- ties, I am stepping aside now be- cause I can no longer keep up with the physical demands of coaching the team on Sunday afternoons." A painful arthritic hip condi- tion, Halas said, "has progressed to the point where I simply can- not move about quickly enough on the sidelines." Halas, long a familiar sideline figure yanking his fedora down over his ears in scolding pursuit of game officials, said he no longer could follow the ball, "and the of- ficials," up and down the field. "I suppose I began to realize this slowdown in one of our final games last season when I started rushing after the referee who was pacing off a penalty and it suddenly dawned on me that I wasn't gaining on hi'h. "I began to wonder whether the officials were speeding up, or I was slowing down." -Tioers place AlKalineon disabled list, DETROIT (/P)-Star outfielder Al Kalihe was placed on the dis- abled list yesterday by the De- troit Tigers.
