THE MICHIGAN DAILY" 11 Soviet Gymnasts Best Formula: Start Young tions such as "Spartak" or "Bu- revestnik." "I've learned a lot about the Russians' views on gymnastics," said Loken, "and it has been a wonderful experience." An important fact that the Rus- sian performers stressed is that gymnastics is not only a display of strength and vigor, but also of aesthetic 'qualities. They pointed out. that well-co- ordinated exercises on the equip- ment is closely related to ballet, where harmony and rhythm are essential, and have found that music is a great help to the per- son performing. They have dem- onstrated to the world that gym-I nastics is one of the most grace- ful and spectacular sports. { "The Russians' extreme exact- ness and confidence is evidence of! the fact that they put in many more years training and compet- ing than our boys,' said Loken. "Unfortunately our gymnasts don't havethe time for this." Loken indicated also that it would be a help to American gym- nasts if they had greater oppor- tunities for meets with teams from other countries. Compares U.S.-Russia When asked how some of the top American teams such as Mich- igan, Illinois, Southern Illinois, and Penn State would stand up against the Russian team, Loken said: ''We'd give them a good fight, but I doubt if we would win." He expressed tempered confi- dence that in the next four years before the Olympic games in Ja- pan, the American gymnasts would be able to develop a team to challenge the Russians. Coach Loken was also very pleased that the Russian team was able to come to the U.S. be- cause of the great social value of cultural and athletic exchanges. This exhibit at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was one of seven exhibi- tions that the' team has given here as part of the State Depart- ment's cultural exchange pro- gram.
