RY 15, 1961 THE MICHIGAN DAILY_ P Schedule New Courses For Honors Students I Three new College Honors' courses will be offered next sem- ester. They are: a proseminar in social philosophy; a review of funda- mental concepts of physics; and an examination of psychology and literature. Courses in general systems and "Living Ideas in the Social Scien- ces," offered in the past, will be again. that social scientists who attempt to apply empirical findings to the problem are too often philosophi- cally muddled. But philosophers, studying the problem, are often ignorant of the law and empirical data, further compounding the muddle. Honors Students The course is open to under- graduates in the honors program and graduate students. Prof. Noah Sherman will offer a physics course for honors stu- dents not primarily interested in science, but who are interested in learning about physics and the role it plays in understanding of man's environment. i I ---.-.4%----- - -The course will attempt to de- siders the bearing of relevantv facts," the announcement of the velop a thorugh accoplshmens course published by the Honors such as Newtonian mechanics of council states. or quantum physics, rather than Prof. Kaufman sees a massive to present a thin survey of all confusion and perplexity about scientific accomplishment. social and legal responsibility, de- Prof. Frederick Wyatt of the spite the existence of great masses psychology department will offer of literature pertaining to the sub- the psychology and literature course. Weigh Plan For Grants To Africans The University is considering a plan to join a group of American universties and colleges which will offer several four-year scholar- ships to African students, Prof. James Davis, International Center director, said yesterday. This group, the African Scholar- ship Program of American Univer- sities, is one of several projects the International Center has "in process," for Africa, Prof. Davis reported. "We would like to get some students here from the Con- go and the Eastern parts of Africa as well," he said. The African Scholarship group is going great," he added, "I re- gret we didn't get into it sooner." The main advantages of the formal organization is that their repre- sentatives are in Africa, "to help screen and select the individuals. Association with Others "It would also mean association with a distinguished group of col- leges and universities (most of the Ivy League and a few Western schools are involved) in a common project." And as a project of the country's "distinguished" schools, it has at- tracted a good deal of private and governmental financial as- sistance. "This is a very impor- tant advantage," Prof. Davis said. Essentially, it is lack of funds that has kept the University from joining ths program. "We would have to get new money for these scholarships from somewhere, or else take it out of present scholar- ship funds," since the group cur- rently supplies no money, Prof. Davis explained. One African Here "We have one man here, from Kenya, on a program which com- bines local and national funds. We give him a tuition grant, and a national agency handles his main- tenance." This is the nearest ap- proximaton the University has to the program the African Scholar- ship group provides. "Two or three organizations have approached me in the past couple of months," Prof. Davis noted, adding that the rise in interest in scholarships for Afri- can students is part of the "gen- eral awakening in Africa and in the United ptates concerning Africa-the birth of a feelng that we must support the aspriations of the nations in Africa. African needs center around ed- ucation, Prof. Davis said. "It is part of the revolution of rising expectations everyone keeps talk- ing about. The African people need help, and they're going to get it wherever they can." LOST AND FOUND. FOUND-Ladies glove and pen. Call TCB office. A96 LOST: black wallet in or around Mich- igan Theater.
