neers' International Congress and
Exposition running until Friday.
The "bump measurer" is a 30-
foot-long, self -.propelled vehicle
called the highway profilometer.
Creeping along the highway, its
16 small wheels record pavement
irregularities as minor as one 32nd
of an inch on sensitive equipment.
"It measures not only how much
a driver's neck will snap, but also
the reaction of the soil beneath
the highway to the weight of
highway vehicles," Glenn Edmon-
son, associate dean of the engi-

neering college and one of,
coordinators of the exhibit,
plained.

The vehicle was developed by
the civil engineering department
in cooperation with the Michigan
State Highway Department. It is
built- on a revamped truck chassis.
The highway department.has
made good use of the profilometer
to test thousands of miles of high-
ways across the state for areas of
stable and unstable pavement, Ed-
monson said.
The University's apparatus for
studying driver behavior is being
fitted inside a brand new sedan
for the exhibit by the automobile
company which sponsored its de-
velopment.
A motion picture camera inside
the car photographs the highway
conditions which the driver en-
counters, while other instruments
record how he reacts-the number
of times he applies the brakes, ac-
celerates and turns in and out of
traffic.
Test Car Performance
A virtual laboratory-on-wheels
tests every aspect of the perform-
ance of motor 'vehicles while on
the road, from fuel economy to
wind resistance. '
Also included in the exhibit will
be a nose cone and instruments
from rockets recently fired by the
aeronautical and electrical engi-
neering departments to study con-
ditions in the upper atmosphere.
An Institute of Science and Tech-
nology lumnescence experiment, a
model of the Ford Nuclear Reactor
and displays dsecribing University
research will round out the ex-
hibit.
Robert Boyd of the Research
Institute and Prof. Jay Bolt of the
mechanical engineering depart-
ment are helping Edmonson co-
ordinate the display.
