THE MICHIGAN DAILY ehigan Cagers Play Idaho Squad Weak in Decision over Purdue By UTU ENZLER Michigan's wrestlers had to rely on a win by Karl Fink in the final match of the afternoon last Saturday to salvage a 14-11 vic- tory over Purdue. Purdue is the same team that the Wolverines trounced by a whopping 23-3 score when they met last year. It is therefore evi- dent that either Purdue is stronger or Michigan is weaker. Team Seemis Weaker Unfortunately, it seems that both are true. Dominic Fatta is one of the classiest wrestlers in the con- ference at 147 lbs. He won last year, and defeated Wilfried Hilde- brandt with ease this year. Bob Marshall, another star in the Big Ten, topped Dennis Fitzgerald, something no one could do all last year. In addition to these powers, the Boilermakers got very impressive performances from unexpected sources, Chip Rose, who tied soph- omore John Zauner, and Tim Mongon, who managed a tie with Jack Barden. Miss Hoyles, Olm, Wilbanks The Wolverines are undoubtedly weakened by the loss, through graduation, of Mike Hoyles, whoj registered the only pin of the afternoon in last year's match, having moved up from his 123-lb. class to 130, as well as Fred Olm at heavyweight, both of whom also placed in the Big Ten champion- ships. Ambi Wilbanks, the 130-lb. king, is out for the season because of injuries, and Dick Fronczak has stopped competing because of scholastic difficulties. Nevertheless, the narrow escape at Lafayette can be explained by more than the personnel losses of last year's team. This year's team is favored to retain the title they won last year, though perhaps not by such an overwhelming score as when they defeated runnerup Iowa 67-50. Michigan was forced to compete without the services of Jim Blaker, 147-lb. champ last year. He was in Chicago taking an important ex- am, but will probably see action for the rest of the year, barring injury or some similar tragedy, Fitz Not in Shape Yet! Fitzgerald was not in top shape for his match with the tough Marshall, having just recently come off the gridiron and forced to trim to his wrestling weight of 167 pounds in a big hurry. He will be looking for revenge in March, when the Big Ten championships will be held, and don't be surprised if Fitz faces Marshall for the title. Guy Curtis, the unofficial 191-lb. king, is still nursing the knee in- jury incurred during the football season. He could not make the trip to Lafayette and is a doubtful starter against Penn State when they invade Ann Arbor this Fri- day. When he does return to ac- tion, Curtis is expected to be one of the big favorites for individual titles in dual meets and in the championships., Armelagos Lessens Keen's Worries, Orte of the most heartwarming victories of the day was turned in by sophomore Nick Armelagos at 123 lbs., which should lighten the burden of lack of strength at the lower weights that has worried Coach Cliff Keen all year. - If the sophomores and returnees perform up to expectations, and if injuries are not so numerous or so long-lasting, it is very possible that the close call at Lafayette was a false alarm. If factors continue to work against the forces of Lady Luck, it will be fingernail biting time in Ann Arbor whenever the wrestling team takes on a new foe. m - I COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Paul Arizin's 25-foot jump shot with 6 seconds to play last night gave the Philadelphia Warriors a 110- 108 National Basketball Associa- tion victory over the Detroit Pis- tons. The victory kept the Warriors in first place in the Eastern Divi- sion of the NBA. Wilt (The Stilt) Chamberlain, 7'1" Warrior star and the league's leading scorer, displayed uncanny accuracy as he netted 36 points. He hit on 15 of 16 field goal tries at one stretch.
