n Courses or Students in Sciences , , .:. By LINDA REISTMAN For students working in social .and physical sciences and having a limited amount of time to devote} to language study, the University offers two special Russian reading courses. "Russia is making more and more advances in these areas, and many students find that important scien- tific papers are not always avail- able in translation," Prof. John Mersereau of the slavic language department said.- Better known as Russian 11 andj 12, the courses have been offered! to all upperclassmen and graduate students at the University for 10 years. The slavic language depart- ment found that interest in Rus- Aian from science and social science majors increased notice- ably with the advent of sputnik. Bare Start "We start from scratch and cover allof the necessary grammarj in the first semester, Prof. Mer- sereau said. The students work as a group during this semester, study- ing basic grammar fundamentals necessary for translation of writ- ten material. Professors Mersereau and Hor- ace Dewey of the slavic lan-I guage department prepared a spe- cial textbook for the course after finding that the conventional Rus-I sian grammars placed too much emphasis on speaking the lan- guage for our purposes, Halfway through the first semes- ter the students being reading un- simplified selections compiled from Rusian newspapers and journals. Individual Basis The second semester of the course is handled on an individual basis. Students select various ma- terials to study according to their interests and fields of concentra- tion. They meet privately with the instructor once a week to discuss and correct their translations. "Most of the students presently enrolled in the course are majoring in fields of science or social sci-- ence," Prof. Mersereau said. "Last year students represented 24 fields of concentration, ranging from epidemiology to psysics.' ' "Our aim is simply to prepare students for completely indepen- dent translation with accuracy in their fields of concentration," Prod. Mersereau noted. Give WCBN Position To Karissont Rik Karlsson, '62, has been chos- en new general manager for WCBN; the residence hall radio network. Karlsson announced the ap- pointment of Robert Heath, '63, as business manager and John Chase. 61, as programmiig direc- tor for the network. Leonard Wiener, '62, recently resigned from the managership, stating that one of his reasons was the refusal of the station's board of directors to incorporate the three broadcasting studios in the three quadrangles into one, in the South Quadrangle studio. "I'm for consolidation of the station," Karlsson said, "but not in one quad as was proposed." Wiener has agreed to be a spe- cial assistant to the new general manager. "Consolidation into one quad tends to give more attraction to the people in that quad," Karlsson said. "I hope to find a neutral place." The student government body of the University of California at Berkeley created the board in late November in answer to student dissatisfaction with present poli-' cies.
