THE MICHIGAN ADAILY Engineermg English Stirs Controversy that through the addition of an extra year to the engineering pro- gram more time could be devoted to the humanities and the social sciences, such as the present five- year course in which a civil engi- neer may also receive a bachelor of arts degree. In 1956 the American Society for Engineering Education pub- lished a report of its Humanistic- Social Research Project. Serving on the committee which worked on the project were Prof. Warner G. Rice, chairman of the literary college English department, and Prof. Kenneth E. Boulding, of the economics department. Students Would Profit The project demonstrated that engineering students would profit from an increased acquaintance with the humanities and social sciences. The committee recom- mended that "the formulation of objectives must be carried out jointly by the engineering and art faculties," and, further, that "hu- manistic-social studies must be distinguished from business train- ing." More time devoted to humani- ties as well as to the social sci- ences in the engineering college would be highly beneficial, Prof. Weeks agrees.. He chose as an example the Massachusetts Insti- tute of Technology, where approx- imately 20 per cent of the four year curriculum is devoted to work in the humanities and the social sciences. MIT is a leader in the implementation of a 'new con- cept in engineering education, he says. The problem or engineering English at the University is evi- denced in the fact that engineer- ing faculty members say their students cannot adequately pre- sent their ideas on paper. Could the literary college and the en- gineering college work together in! the interests of a broader or more intense program for the engineer- ing student, or will neither one of the faculties have enough of a grasp of the other's discipline to meet on common ground?
