Michigan Basketbal1 C o a c h Dave Strack indicated that the Wolverines will confront Butler with the same slow, deliberate of- fense which they used in the first half against Pitt's Panthers. If, however, the Bulldogs should go into the famous pressing de- fense which has given them sev- eral come-from-behind victories in the past, Strack plans to speed up the pace and utilize the at-, tack which clinched the 86-70 de- cision over Pitt., "If I had to choose a turning point in that game," Strack re- marked, "it would have to be the 40 ITINERARIES featuring: Western &Eastern Europe Scandinavia Africa South America " Japan round-the-world 54-80 days $825-$2,200 way we broke Pittsburgh's press. We hit on a few quick baskets, and we knew they wouldn't stop us after that." Strack ppinted out that the Wolverines were forced to adapt to every style of defense against the Panthers. Pitt played man-to- man patterns in the first half, and then employed a zone defense before switching to the futile press. The fact that Michigan could stand up against all styles was only one of the factors that heart- ened Strack in his first victory as Head Coach. "The boys all rebounded well," he stated. "Although he didn't score, (Bob) Brown led the team in rebounds with 14 - (Scott) Maentz and (Don) Petroff played well, and of course (John) Tid- well was terrific. "Tidwell held us together in the first half," he continued, mention- ing that 18 of the senior's 38 points came in the low-scoring first half, which saw the entire team tally only 31. Michigan's second-half perfor- mance is of special significance. Nursing a one-point lead at the intermission, the cagers shot with 60 per cent accuracy to outscore Pittsburgh 54-39 from that point on. This is in marked contrast to the trend of last year's Wolverine games, or the opening loss to Van- derbilt last week. In the Butler- Michigan tilt last season, for in- stance, only one point separated the two teams at the halfway point, but the Wolverines faltered after the break and Butler pulled away to an easy 85-63 win.
