THE MICHIGAN DAILY WED1 olverines Win Home Opener, 86-70 COACHES DISCUSS RULES: Big Ten Meetings To Open Toward the beginning of the period Maentz got hot and in a two minute period he hit for six of his eight points while Petroff supported him with two baskets. Then it was Tidwell's turn with six straight points to help the cause. Petroff Hot At another point in the period Petroff hit for four straight bas- kets which Tidwell followed with five straight a few minutes later. He left the game with one minute remaining to a loud ovation. Toward the end of the game tempersstarted to flare and Pitt center John Fridley had a techni- cal called against him, and for- ward Darwin Smith was ejected from the game for intentionally fouling. The crowd was also thrilled by ahe ball handling of Wolverine guard Tom Eveland and the ag- gressive board play of Brown, who though he scored no points was the leading rebounder with 14. Pitt's second half frustration was well expressed by the actions of Lockhart, who at the final buz- zer heaved the ball the length of the court over the opposite bas- ket. Frosh Star Leaves 'iM Rod Linder, a top Michigan freshman guard prospect has dropped out of school. Linder was reportedly dissatis- fied with the curriculum offered at the University. He plans to en- roll at Southern Illinois. A product of Centralia, Illinois, Linder was a second semester freshman and would have been eligible for varsity competition in February. He is 6'1". Although agreeing that the wild card substitution did much to open up the game this fall, con- ference coaches still pursue the hope of getting a more liberal substitution rule. This, of course, would be the return of unlimited substitution. Bump Elliott of Michigan is chairman of the Coaches Commit- tee and Biggie Munn of Michigan State heads the athletic directors' group. Coaches also have recommend- ed that the conference football schedule, calling for a complete round robin slate by 1969, be frozen at the 1965-66 level. This stage provides for 10 games, in- stead of nine, with seven confer- ence dates for each team. Faculty representatives take up the conference's most important problem Thursday-reviewing the financial aid to athletes system. This involves substituting an academic standard for the con- troversial need factor which re- quires parents of athletes to make contributions according to' their incomes.; The Big Ten television com- mittee met today. The conference is committed to the NCAA televi- sion policy for another year and no new plan is expected to be proposed. The Big Ten, however, would like to make its own TV arrange- ments providing for a conference game to be beamed in the area each Saturday of the season. Midwestern viewers see Big Ten teams on some dates and teams from elsewhere in the country on others under the NCAA program.
