THE MICHIGAN DAILY Li braries Provide By ROBIN McMILLIN Lounge chairs and settees, art exhibits and record players may not sound like library accessories, but they are all an important part of the University's new Under- graduate Library. The library, one of two under- graduate libraries in the nation, was opened for service on Janu-' ary 16, 1958. Since that time, over three and one-half, million people have been counted as they entered through the turnstiles. "The staff is interested in the students," Roberta Keniston, di- rector, said, "and they want to, help them in any way they can." Mrs. Keniston emphasized that the library is a friendly place, where undergraduate students, especially, can feel at home. UGLI Exhibits Art In the front part of the build- ing (which is affectionately known as UGLD is a lounge and print exhibit area. The pictures are fur- nished by the University Museum of Art, which reaches a larger group of people in this way, as well as providing an interesting at- mosphere. A permanent metal sculpture piece here was the gift of the class of '58. Another print gallery is on the fourth floor of the library. The art history department is in charge of this exhibit. Many of the pic- tures hanging there are especially useful to students in art history classes, but many other students visit the gallery only for their own pleasure. Snack Bar Breaks Another unique feature of UGLI is the snack bar on the lower level. It is closed during meal hours, since its intention is not to pro- vide meals, but rather to furnish refreshment, both .physical and mental. It is a blessing to the student who "camps out" in the library for long hours at a time. It is less of a wrench away from studying (and back to it) if one doesn't have to get his wraps on, go out, and walk several blocks just to get a cup of coffee. The study areas of the library are furnished to suit almost every- one's taste: you may choose a bright - colored modern lounge chair or couch, a large study table shared with several others, or a secluded single desk. For those who wish to use them, there are several non - smoking rooms along one side of the build- ing on each floor. Music Sets Mood There's air-conditioning in warm weather, and three-hour concert programs played in the second CLEMENTS LIBRARY-The building on South University holds historical collections as well as stacks of books.
