SUCCEEDS JOE GORDON:'
Scheffing Named Tiger Manager

"But I'm impressed with the
records some of the young players
are bringing up with them from
the minors."
Scheffing, a St. Louis native, flew1
here Monday from the Scottsdale,
Ariz. home for the -press, confer-
ence announcement of his signing.1
t Ron Hansen
F~T. KNOX, Ky. W-'-Pvt. Ron#
Hansen tripped and almost fell on
the parade ground yesterday after
learning he had been picked as
the American League's Rookie of
the Year for 1960.
"I can't believe it ,. .. unbeliev-
able," said the 22-year-old short-
stop for the Baltimore Orioles,
dropping out of the close order
drill formation at the armor cen-
ter.
Hansen, whose bat and glove
work. helped catapult the , Orioles
from seventh place to second in
one year, collected 22 of 24 votes
from a special committee of the
Baseball Writers Association of
America. The other two were split_
between his teammates, first "base-
man Jim Gentile and, pitcher
Chuck Estrada.
"I'm so surprised at this, there
is nothing to say. This is some-
thing every ball player dreams of
but never believes will happen."

The Tigers' hunt for their eighth
manager since 1952 was completed
only after Stengel turned down
the Job.
Stengel, let loose by the New
York Yankees after winning 10
pennants in 12 years, was the first
choice. But he decided not to take
the post; after three consultations
with Tiger officials. Instead, he
was one of those recommnending
Scheffing.
Scheffing was undismayed at be-
ing No. 2 choice.
"I'd like to be second to Stengel
all' my life,"' he said.
Scheffing is the first Tiger man-
ager to sign a pact for more than
one season since Mickey Cochrane
built the club into a steady winner
from 1934 to 1938.
