TOPS LIONS GROUND ATTACK:
Pietrosante Not H it by Sophomore Slump

Special1/alue!

By FRED STEINHARDT
No one can say that the Nation-
al Football League's "Rookie of the
Year" for 1959 is suffering from a
sophomore slump.
Nick Pietrosante, the youthful
Detroit Lion fullback who receiv-
ed the award last season via the
Sporting News poll, is currently
the team's top ground gainer.
Pietrosante scored the Lions'
only touchdown last Sunday
against the Los Angeles Rams on
a 16 yard burst near the end of
the third quarter, providing the
impetus for Detroit's 12-10 win.
Trapped End
"The play was supposed to be
an off tackle trap but as it turned.
out, we trapped their right end
intsead," said Pietrosante after
the game. "After I got through the
line I cut back toward the right."
Last season, Pietrosante gained
447 yards in 76 carries for an

average of 5.9 yards per carry.
This was the best rushing aver-
age of any of the top 16 backs in
the league.
In 72 carries this year he'< has
already picked up 399 yards and
there are five games left for the
rapidly improving Lions.
Pietrosante's talents do not stop
at ball carrying. He is also a good
pass catcher and a tough blocker.
Last year he caught 16 passes,
mostly of the safety valve varie-
ty.
Pietrosante has two touch-
downs to his credit this year and
scored three times in 1959.
How Block 'Goliaths'?
How does Pietrosante at. 220
pounds go about blocking the huge
defensive linemen of the NFL who
often weigh 270 or 280? "There
really is no set way," he said. "I
size up each player individually.
"That's what is so fascinating
